What kind of mushrooms are these?

What kind of mushrooms are these? - Homesteading Questions i'm just wanting to make sure its ok for my children to be around.

Well I'll tell you something - I don't know what kind they are but to me they look like you can get poisoned by just looking at them -

Actually, they're edible: Inky Caps. Not in this condition, though, these are way too old. They have a grey cap with kind of feathers that is long and the bottom is connected to the stem when they're young - kind of like a cigar stuck on a stick - with striations of shades of grey on the cap. I've eaten them, and they're mild but ok sauteed.
NOW, I'll say you should check with a local mushroom person when you find them when they're young, so that I don't poison you by judging from a picture!

I find that even when the cap is past its prime, the stems are still quite good.
