Finding The Storage That Wasn't There

Challenge:
Find more storage space in your house without knocking down walls or major renovation.

My favorite trick? Above every door there is usually a 3' long by 1' high unused space. Build a simple box shelf and screw it to the wall. Voila! Instant storage space for all kinds of items.

Storage chest as lamp table. We have a small leather covered trunk. Lots of storage space, holds a lamp and a book, drink, etc. I have a small galvanized popcorn tin that the kids gave me. I use it for storing a project and set my Chromebook on it, takes up wasted space in the corner between above trunk and the wall beside my chair. Looks like an old cream can with my favorite tractor and a hay wagon, family getting their tree, in the snow....James

I lived in a convent in England for a year. Each room was about 8 x 11' with a bed, small dresser, prayer kneeler, desk and chair. What made that space comfortable, was a one foot deep shelf that ran down both long walls about 18" from the ceiling. You can place an amazing amount of stuff on that much shelf space and it takes up no floor space at all.

I really find open shelves more efficient than cabinets and drawers.

My basement has awesome shelving that is simply deck boards and cinderblock stacked up. Totally sturdy and easily moveable!

Closets have terrible shelves, add another board to make the shelf as deep as the closet. I put an extra shelf above the rod, about half way between the original shelf and the ceiling in one of my closets. It turned out really nice and is very functional.

For those of you handy with a saw and hammer...take some 1x6 and a sheet of plywood cut to whatever size you wish, and build a open box. Attach cheap Harbor Freight coasters.

Instant under-bed storage, you can roll out and back in!

Oh, well, geez, there ya go, YOU gotta BASEMENT!
No basements down here. We have closets that are bulging.
I like the shelf about the doors idea...
