How much paint?

Wanting to repaint our log cabin. It is 20x24 480 downstairs. Then the log ends upstairs. I figure I can't really use the regular measurments for paint coverage, because of the round logs. The paint on it is in good cond. I just want to change it. It is brown now and want to change to a med. Grey. The log ends will be white, as they are now.

Decent coverage for an exterior paint on a rough wood surface is about 200 square feet per gallon. I'd guess calculate your wall area square footage, then add at least 50% to allow for the curvature of the logs.

With the standard above, 200 sq. ft. per gallon, 5 gallons SHOULD do the whole thing, but we all know that never works out, lol.
Use 1 or 5 gallons, then measure the sq. feet it covered and recalculate for the remaining left to do.

By my calculations a 20x24 building will have 88 LF of wall.
If that wall is 10' tall, that equals 880 SF.

If the gables are on the 20' end, assuming a roof slope of 6/12, add another 100 SF for the two gable ends.

Total square footage = 980 SF
Add 50% to account for log curvature = 1,470 SF
At 200 SF / gallon, total paint needed = 7.35 gallons

How far are you from the paint store? They are very good at matching the color. Why don't you start with 4 gallons and see how far it goes then go buy more.

I use Valspar Medallion paint. Covers well, cleans up nice, and lasts a long time. Fleet Farm carries it around here. Lowes doesn't call it Medallion but it's the same thing.

Check with Navy surplus. Maybe there is an aircraft carrier that had a few gallons left over.
