Concrete Question

I am going to cover my brick fireplace with Quikwall which is a white Quikrete product with an adhesive. If I texture the concrete to look like stone, how do I smooth it out if I don't like it? Can I sand it down or would I need to put a smooth coat over it?

...or chip it off and start over.

Best bet - buy a couple of boxes of man made fascia rock. Mortar it on and move on with life.

Going to be near impossible to texture a mortar type product in a thin layer to look anything like stone. If you want stone rather than brick you can either strip off the existing brick and re-lay stone in it's place, or you can apply one of the many cultured stone products directly over the brick.

Look up cultured stone on line. Many different types and appearances available, and you simply "stick" it on the existing surface with a mortar type product. Refacing a fireplace is a common application for this product.

Try a small section first, 1 or 2 ft. before you do the whole thing and realize you don't like it.

It has fiberglass fibers in it. Won't look anything like stone. And DO NOT mix up very much of it at a time, it sets "quick"

My original plan was to put the quikwall on and then put venetian plaster over it. I need a smooth surface for the venetian plaster. Then I thought I could save myself some work by just leaving it as concrete.

I guess I will put 1 coat smooth and see how it looks. If I like the color, I will do a 2nd coat with some texture and swirls to it. If not, another smooth coat and then on to venetian plaster.
