Planting Grass

I have a newly constructed pond way in the back of my property. I need to plant some grass on my dam to control erosion but everywhere I read that it needs irrigation. The problem is I don't have a water supply that goes back that far.

Is irrigation really necessary? How would you guys handle this?

I'm very new to all of this!

Does the pond have water in it already?

Yes, last I checked, it was about half full.

You should be able to pump and use that water for grass on need basis, no?

That was my first thought but wasn't sure how to go about it. What kind of setup should I be looking for? It's a 1/2 acre pond so the surrounding area isn't so small. And I don't live there so it will need to be on a timer or something I'm guessing.

I live in a typically wet area, so what I know might not alley to Texas climate......

New seeding needs to be soaked every 3 days or so to get it established, until,th roots go down deep. Weaning it of less water or longer between watering helps to get the roots to grow down as it takes hold. But don't go cold turkey on the water.

So, are you there every 3 days or so, buy a pump - electric or gas what do you have available - maybe put a 270 gallon tote to fill up as a storage and gravity feed from there, or any number of possibilities.

You would be planting native types of grasses, that can survive the dry weather I presume you have. You just need to get it established, maybe the first 3 months or so?

I gave up trying to plant grass, or trees for that matter in the spring. The summer heat is just too much for most of them, unless you can water daily.

I plant grass in the fall and never have a failure, and dont water.

Work the ground up. Crank on the grass see with a little hand seeder. disk it in very lightly, or pull a one section drag harrow across it with the ATV.

Then walk off and leave it.

If I really want to baby it, I will sow a light stand of wheat or oats along with it.

Why not use the stuff they use on the side of the road after they do work? It's some kind of seeded matting. It doesn't get watered.
