What to do???

Ok, so we bought 7 acres in western WI last summer. 5 acres is fairly flat open tillable land, the other 2 is woods. We are hoping to break ground this coming spring for our home, but where would you start this summer? My bride wants fruit trees, but I'd like to get electricity and h2o in, if we can come up with the cash.

Water is always #1, so I'd definitely start getting the water and electricity in first. The price of a few trees are no comparison to the costs of digging a well though. So a compromise may be possible for just a few favorite types of fruit.

I'd put in water and elec also....but if you're just putting in a small orchard, the cost of that will be way, way less than the elec and water - maybe you can find a way to get those trees in for her too.

I wouldn't take a chance on fruit trees without access to water. They are going to need care in the first year.Plan your space first! You will not get everything right but minimize the changes by making sure you are both on the same page about where you want what. You can get a little garden in to eat off of but fruit and nut trees are where you put them. There's plenty of mistakes to make and you'll make your share just like the rest of us did!
Good luck,

Wade

Wisconsin is in a moderate drought right now, so 1shotwade is probably right.

I do understand wanting the trees in fast, but you will be carrying water for them.

You aren't losing much time by getting them in next spring, or even this fall, though.

Water and electric are kind of biggies.
