Briars

I Have some grouns that was pasture and has been somewhat taken over by patches of briars. What is the best way to get rid of these permanently? I used a bush hog on a similar area and they seemed to come back worse the next year

I had a similar problem, my goats loved them and there is none there now.

Keep mowing them, they lose some vitality if you keep the leaf area small, they cannot rebound. Do your goats eat any leaves at all? They usually like some browse, mine like new leaves. Will you spray if needed, a good brush killer in the fall right before the plant goes dormant will kill them. The plant is taking nutrients back down into the roots and will draw the chemical down, killing it. The right spray will not kill grass, just broadleaves, spot spray or total coverage if real bad. Cross bow used to be a good one with a surfactant....James

My sister has an acre lot N. CA that was covered with huge blackberry bushes. She had it fenced off and bought a raggedy bunch of goats from the sale barn, let them live on the lot for a year or so then took them back to the sale barn. Goats will do the job.
My sis was appalled that I actually planted blackberries here in IL!
