New farm truck

Having moved from the city to a small farm last summer I found myself sorely in need of a truck. I had a 5X10 utility trailer I could pull behind the minivan and I have a sedan. Neither were capable of bringing home any of the equipment I've bought and have a few more things I would like to buy as I find them and money allows. We've been borrowing a friend's truck or one from work but I really hate borrowing especially when it seems like I'm using it every other weekend. Went on a business trip last fall with a guy from another facility and over dinner he told me he was going to sell is truck in the spring to get a new one. It's a late 99 Ford F-250 extended cab, 4wd, with the 7.3 powerstroke diesel. The price he was asking was right and I wasn't in a huge hurry. Fast forward and we met him Friday evening with a check and drove it back home. Not going to be my daily driver but will work GREAT for a farm truck. Probably overkill but I don't think I could have found a gas 1/2 ton 4wd for what I paid.

At one point I used the minivan to pull an empty gravity box to the neighbors to get it filled with corn. The weather was crap and using the tractor to pull an empty 8 miles, leave it, and drive back home wasn't appealing. I brought the full wagon home with the friend's truck.

The 7.3 is a great motor, a real work horse. The weight of it will make you glad you have 4WD if it's muddy or snowy, the combination of all that weight in the front and all that power in the back can make it really dance around without 4WD. Hope it serves you well for a long time. Our farm truck is a 96 F350 with the 7.3, it was rode hard and put away wet before we got it, including wrecked, but it still runs strong and even the a/c still works.

This was in a minor accident. Previous owner was a good mechanic but not a body guy. He put new aftermarket fenders and hood on it with a rattle can paint job. I'll take the time and money to sand and put proper primer and paint on the front and it will look real good again.

First tank of fuel through it got me a smidge over 22 mpg. Can't do that with a gas engine in a 3/4 ton truck.

I went to a friend's house the other day at the top of a long steep gravel driveway. It's still a bit soft and the truck started spinning. I could have made it but didn't want to tear up their drive. 4wd came in handy.
