Thumbs up Hey I Won't Pass It Up

My wife works next to the Extension Office, people bring in extra Produce. The Lady there says they get more that they can handle.

My wife told her we will take it.

Why do people bring produce to the extension office?

I am also curious why people would bring produce to the Extension office, no one does that around here, we take our extra produce to the local food pantries, so the truly needy can have it.

Many beginner growers get info/help from the Extension office staff; it's just a way of showing appreciation.

We all get soil tests done there, as I said before maybe you could give the produce to the truly needy, you are completely able to garden on your own and do, so why would you take food you don't really need when it could help feed others?

I use to take extra produce to the food pantry here. I was late getting there one day and they had already started serving. I noticed very quickly it was a morning stop for many delivery vans and other employed drivers of various trucks looking for a free snack. Never have I seen such greedy and thankless people. They came out to my pickup wanting melons to take home. When I told them the produce that I brought would have to be consumed inside with the meal. Next I got a verbal rebuttal. Now I feed any surplus to my animals or compost it!

Well your food pantry is nothing like my food pantry, mine is run by our local churches, you register, heck you don't even have to prove income, but in this little town everyone knows, you get ONE good size bag of groceries and another of produce (when we have produce available), plus a gallon of milk a week...that is it!! You can't just wander up and get a bag of food. I volunteer there each week, most of the recipients are very elderly. I take all of my extra produce and eggs there, it makes me feel like I am helping.

Seems Agmantoo, you are talking about a soup kitchen and not a food pantry.

One reason I don't garden like I use to is because I'm unable to. Try to keep me and my wife in what we need with our 20'X20' Garden. Most other needy I've seen could do this much if they wanted.

Take what help I can and appreciate it very much.

People that work in the Extension office near Tina may also be bringing surplus to share with their co-workers and those in neighboring offices. I bring cherry tomatoes in to the office so students and staff can help themselves. One woman brings me zucchini and I give her a lamb summer sausage because she doesn't eat tomatoes, and so on. Call it a private local food pantry.

Better for Rock and Tina to use it than have it thrown out.

Our Pickup drags the Boat. The Boat loads and Unloads its self. Fishing set with Line in the water, reel in fish if I'm lucky. Hunting go set in Woods shoot something, if it is too big get help. Twice as Bad Off! You have no Idea what is going on in my Body, dealing with pain daily and worry of Cancer, not to mention sever Leg Cramps in the Leg that they wanted to amputate 20 years ago and I don't really care. Have a Good Friend that is Paraplegic and does the same. Like me he has not given up like so many wanted me to.

Oh I might add being a Church Leader I do help out plenty through there.

A little advice...

Tell the folks over at the Extension Office, "Thank you", and don't broadcast too far that you are receiving some stuff they don't want.

A) Because folks that bring it, may stop doing so if they think it's not being used by the folks at the office. And...

B) There are legions of people out there who don't want to see or hear of anybody getting anything...Unless they get a cut, of course.

Never underestimate the cussedness of your fellow man...

Just because they have Jobs, does not mean they have money...
I worked a Job once, after the Bankruptcy payment and the child support, and taxes, and medicare and SS... BIG FAT ZERO.

But I would tend to agree people often are selfish and thankless... More so when turned into something just short of a animal depending on survival instinct...

I'm always thankful, Shoot boss would buy me lunch cause he knew what was going on. though that meant he bought for the crew as well.
I'm more then sure it was written off as a business meeting...
None the less, sometimes Only meal I had.

When looking to help people,I look for those I know... even if not needy, they can still use a hand.
And I like to think it fosters good will.
As such they help those they know and so forth.
You know paying it forward.
Leaves less room for those that would take advantage.

When I was young my family hit hard times, I remember being hungry.
We went to a small lake not far away, not even a small fish was caught. But we had hope in that trip.

Talking with a schoolmate led to the discovery of a soup kitchen just a short walk, yes they called it that. No food was given except as meals.

Which to me makes better sense. Should be no waste you cook whats served and it is eaten. rather then someone take something the may not use and go to waste.

I rounded up my brother and we went and checked it out. had a bit of food. Of coarse being on the hungry side, that bit did not appease.
But they where generous and allowed us seconds.

I upon arriving home told my parents of this discovery, that they should go there and eat as well.

They did but only once, I think it killed my dad. but he did not stop us.
They made do on what we spared by eating there.

I have not thought about that in a long time, but its still part of my fabric. that kindness is part of me. I won't begrudge the hungry.
if you can feed yourself more then likely you wont settle for what some one else offers. know what I mean. I'll go and get what I want, thank you very much...

My Grandmother on dads side took in many a kid, and fed even more.
One gal, almost 40 years or so later saw my name, and she asked if so and so was my grandmother, why yes she was, well seems my grandmother took her in because she got pregnant and her parents kicked her out. her help helped her to keep her child. and she eventually had a pretty lofty job. one with influence.
This Girl was of African Origin, and if I needed to describe her I would say Black , My Grand Dad Scott Irish and Grand mum French Canadian.
So kind of odd for folks in the 60's...

My long winded point being, help where you can, help when you can, the world needs all the help it can get and more so by the day.
forget convention, don't let a few jerks ruin it for all.
they will always be there. but so will those you can help.

I wouldn't have passed it up either, and I probably have more funds than Rock and Tina, and not as many ailments as Rock. The people who brought the produce to the Extension Office intended for it to be used. They could have taken it to the food pantry, but chose to bring it where they did. If there is more produce than the workers in that office can use, it is their choice to give it away. It's their choice to give it to Tina and Rock. It's not like it's going to go to waste - it's going to feed people.

Rock does give of his time. Being given good produce is like seeing Karma at work. Perhaps we all could take Thumper's father's advice..."If ya can't say somethin' nice...don't say nothin' at all."
