Another Firewood Question

Ok our Insert can take 36 inch Log and very Big around.

On regular Wood Stoves most I cut wood about as Big as it would hold.

On this Insert I'm thinking cut it not so Big. Easier to get in Wood Box and Insert plus burns better.

Have found with this don't want to Load too much and once going shut it down pretty tight or it gets way too Hot. It is rated to heat 3500 SQ FT and we only have 1800.

Thoughts?

Rock, I have found that it is much easier for me to get wood into our heater with the wood pointed straight in. We split ours small but 16" in length or less and can hold lots more wood that way, rather than crossways. I like mine split small. Seems like you can get more in there. IMO it burns about the same.

I've experienced both large and small. For me I like wood split smaller. It seems to burn hotter, but it also burns faster. The thing is smaller wood burns better. The bigger the wood for my stove means less draw and harder to keep burning. I've even had the fire go out. Another plus is its much easier to handle. I want all my wood length to be 20 inches and under and small enough to control with one hand. Affectionately I call it old woman wood. IOW anyone can handle it.

Not having a Insert, not sure how they burn a radiate.
but I can burn a fire.
once I have a bed of coals rather have a load of Full vs split logs in the stove.
Stacked so they burn down to said bed.
Faster it burns more heat up the chimney, more you burn, more you have to stoke.
Really comes down to what I'm burning.
Some stove I burn in batches.

My insert is also a Country Flame--Had it 20+ years. Like I said, I;ve found out mine works best if wood goes in front to back--dealer told me to do this--draft works better

Mine has a Grate Welded for Logs laying across, I will lay Logs in across then straight in. Seems to me with ours it don't matter much. I do know it's not hard to cut the draft down too much and put the fire out.

One thing that bothers me is my wife most time won't get it Hot, me I will open it up every so often to get it good and Hot to help keep creosote down.

My woodstove will take wood 22" long.

I cut about 16". As I get older, I find that the wood seems to be getting heavier. Shorter wood allows me to keep from over-firing my stove and it's easier for the wife and I to handle.

Yeah, shorter means more cuts, which means more initial work, but that's what works for me.
