Annual grouse hit the window today.

Well, every year at some point, at least one ruffie flies into one of the windows on our house. At times breaking them. This morning my 6 YO boy says, "daddy, there is a bird out there in the snow, half dead." So I go over to have a look, and it is a grouse, stone dead. Its feathers were wiggling in the wind, so he thought it was only halfway dead! lol. WHy our cats or dog never found it is beyond me. It was fairly stiff, so must have happened real early this morning.

So I am looking for suggestions of what recipe to use. We normally use it for a stir fry, as with a family of 6, it is kind of a small hunk of meat, and we try to stretch it this way.

The winning suggestee, will receive high accolades for their effort.

Contest closes at 4 PM central standard time.

We got quite tired of birds hitting our windows. It was distressing and expensive not to mention that enough song birds are being exterminated as it is. The small ones mostly died as did the bigger ones (grouse) but not before cracking a few windows. We now have red tape criss-crossing the threatened windows to break the reflection. Have not had a bird hit in 8 years.

A friend who is a biologist told us to set any dead looking birds up on their chests (use stones to hold them) as this could revive them if they are only stunned but if they stay lying on their side they will die.

Yeah we revive piles of birds every year. Sometimes you set them on the window sill and kind of forget about them, and one of two things happen: They die, or you are reminded of their presence when they fly around the house, dodging you as you try to corral them.

Blue jays can be loud, and kind of mean to catch! There are two main windows that the birds hit here. We find the angle of the sun, IE the time of year seems to matter a lot, regarding the reflections that the birds see. Do you hang the tape outside the windows?

Grouse Noodle Soup?

Years Back at hunting camp I took One, three of us there so like you said not much to go round in way of meat.
Boiled it up, pulled the bones, added 2 cans mixed veggies, a few tomatoes, and two packs of chicken flavored ramen noodles.
Came out pretty good.

I put those static cling decals on the outside of the windows. If you put them on the inside, they will still see reflections.

Crock pot is so easy. Skin bird, add onions, carrots, potatoes, herbs(parsley, dill, peprecia). If you really need to strech it, take it out when done and make gravey then rice on the side.

Used to get 2 or 3 a year with the pickup windshield in AK... usually in March when they were looking for grit on the gravel road... Mostly spruce hens, but some sharptails, too...

Lol. Well, my sweet wife had brought up moose tenderloins and thawed it out for supper ahead of time, which I never knew.

So tonight we had to settle for ginger moose. I am leaning pot pie for the grouse. I will cut it into quite small chunks so it goes a bit further.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.

Dale

Were spruce hens any good? I have heard they are not the best meat. I have never shot one, they are more in the forest north of us...

Yes pot pie or a nice stew would be good. One grouse is not enough to call everyone for Dinner lol....more like Lunch!

If the season was on, and I had a license, I could easily add a bunch more to the pot. They come and feed on our apple trees all winter by the dozen. Game laws aside, I like having them around. Kind of an emergency food reserve, you know? lol
