Sizing a Kitchent table and chairs to a room?

What is the rule of thumb on this? Planning on a 4 or 6 chair set, room is 10x10. I want enough room where people can walk around the table while someone is sitting in chairs.

I wish more restaurants would be a little more considerate when spacing their tables and chairs.

1/2 the size of the open floor space. I don't like a square room or square table, just me. Add a hutch or something along 1 wall, then measure. Makes some difference on where the door/opening is to whether the table is centered....James

How about a round table? Always looks nice in a square room and can get more people around it. I wouldn't put in a hutch as it will make the room smaller. Or if you have to, maybe a corner hutch.

Work your way in from the walls.

To get around your table and chairs, you will need at least 2 feet along the walls. Your chairs will take up about 2 feet with a person sitting at the table - so -
2' X 2 along each wall = 4'. 10'- 4' = 6'
2' for each chair on each side 2' X 2 = 4'. 6' - 4' = 2'

Your table can be 2' wide!!!!

Add a hutch or cupboard and buy the chairs and tv stands.

That's the problem with buying a table and chairs in the furniture store. They look SO small in that HUGE show room. Get them into your house - and they take up the whole room.

blufford - Yes, I agree that the restaurants need to understand that since American people are getting bigger, they need to have more room between tables!!

The original table was oval with a expandable insert, six chairs.

I've seen the round tables with the fold down sides, usually what I see in the show rooms are HUGE oval tables.

I like at least 4 feet from the table to the wall (2 feet for people sitting and 2 feet for people walking) A bit more is fine, but I wouldn't go less.
