Tractor not starting

On my 990 DB. I can make fire from both points on the solenoid but it wont start. I think I should be able to make sparks by loosening the batt cable and creating an arc, but I cant. Its a new batt. Any ideas?

Has it been cold? Have you not used the tractor in a while? Maybe the battery died on you. I assume its not turning over at all? if you have a battery charger try that.

Start with what you know. If it's turning over you have power at your battery. I'm not familiar with DB990, but assuming it has a generator/altenator/ignition coil setup. If you're getting spark at the points the condenser SHOULD be ok. Pull the plugs and turn it over with the plug grounded to engine block to see if they're sparking.

If all of that checks out then it's not an electrical problem. Which means you have a fuel problem.

Can you jumper straight from the lug on the solenoid to the lug on the starter, and the starter turn over? Then the solenoid is locked up

Do you even have power to the solenoid?

Are you even sure the battery is charged?

Further information this tractor is a David Brown (English Case) diesel tractor

I had a diesel IH.....if I had to wear a extra heavy shirt...I had to hook up the jumper cables to crank it first thing in the morning....then I found out that a great many of the same models had to have a shot of starting fluid to crank on a cold morning.....that and if you don't have enough battery strength, you'll find out real fast what kind of shape your hot cable is in .....is it a 4 cylinder or a 3........never had much problem with a 3 cylinder cranking due to cold

The batt is brand new from WM. I took it back to have it checked this morning and it read out fine. Im getting spark from the pos cable both on the side of the starter, and at the 2 solenoid points. This batt is next to the biggest WM sells. its a 6 cyl

cr Im getting fire from the pos cable to both the bolts on the solenoid

V its not doing anything but lighting up the lites on the dash and its diesel

tootin it hasn't ran for months, so its cold clear through.

Johnny ill try the cable idea.

By the biggest you mean one at least 900 Cold Cranking Amps? or was it even high in CCA?

if you're getting sparks at the starter your battery is good.
If you are shorting from the large positive terminal on the starter to the small terminal that gets its power from the start switch and nothing is happening you may have a bad solenoid.

Your likely right Sammy, BUT I should be able to bypass the S shouldn't I by hooking on direct to the starter stud?? I try that and don't get nothing.

The battery might have lime rust if you haven't used in a while, try hitting it hard once or twice (sounds retarded but it works), should get it goin for a little while till you can get a new battery

Ground cable.

Its contacting good enough to light up a dim bulb, but not near good enough to fire up the starter.

Clean the clamp off. Look for bad swollen corroded cable. Check the ground end of it, they glaze over once in a while as well.

Run a jumper cable from ground post to a good ground see if you get something.

You can only bypass the solenoid to turn the starter (this will not start the tractor) there is a big lug on the solenoid and a big lug on the starter body take a jumper cable to lug on starter body if it whirls the starter you have a bad solenoid.

Sounds to me like starter locked up or brushes not making good contact in starter. Worst case engine locked up. Our old 8n parked it a week latter when snowed try to start nothing same as you I had to pull starter and clean armature installed new brushes and put back on all it needed. hope this helps

................What weight of oil is in the engine ? 10w 30 ?Is it outside ? During winter you should be using 0w-30 , otherwise the oil is SO Thick , the starter can barely turn the engine over ! , fordy

Took the starter off. Took the solenoid apart. It seemed alright. Took the band off the starter. Its rusty inside, and dirty/greasy. Ill have to take it in to town.

After taking the starter out, I took a screwdriver and I could spin the timing gear easy.
