degreasing a barrel????

I picked up a couple of small metal barrels, that I want to use for feed. They are the perfect size for the spot I have, about a foot across, will hold a 50 lbs bag of feed and are not real deep to get it out.

The problem is that they were barrels grease came in. The grease was in a plastic bag, but the barrel is still sort of greasy. Any one know how to degrease a barrel?

Simple Green would work too. THe dawn will work fine, just take a good bit of it to get the job done.

We/I always just lit them up. The grease at the bottom would burn heating the sides which would cause the grease on the sides to turn to liquid and fall down and in turn burn itself out. I burnt my bro that way once. Dad had bought home a 2 1/2 gal bucket that had had grease in it. Told us to go burn it out. I lit it up. I decided that I needed to move it so I picked it up by the wood handle. Fire burnt my hand. I reached under the side of the bucket to tilt it to get the fire off my hand, and spun around. The spinning threw a line of grease/fire across my brothers middle. Nothing major happened tho.

Fill them about 1/3 full of sand and let some kid that doesn't know better roll them around the yard

How does that work Dale. Seems like the sand would just clot to the sides and bottom and stick

I burned all of mine out.
I have about 20 of those little barrels here.
I also mounted metal handles to them that I bought at a hardware store.
It makes them so easy to move around.
From an auto parts store you should be able to buy a couple Bondo Scrapers.
You can use them to manually take out most of the grease then use the dawn and a rag to get it really clean.

If it is cheaper you also might consider the hand cleaner for greasy hands found at Walmart in the Auto Supplies area to do the cleaning with instead of the Dawn. Some other liquid soap[ used after the hand cleaner would get that stink out.

The bad thing about burning is they will rust! I would just wipe out as best you can and wash with soap and hot water.

Yes they rust. Im using one I burnt out years ago, then torched holes at the bottom of it. Put in an old gas funnel and taped off the top. Had a round feed pan that was 2ft dia put under it, and a regular store bought feed pan on top. Works good enough for the chickens feed. They don't notice the rust.
