All of DH's family is in SW Washington. I pulled him over to the "dark side" of NW Oregon.

Yep, I live here and really like it.

You do have to realize that there are two distinct parts to WA. The Cascade mountains run north and south and splits the state. On the western side it has moderate climate and is wetter and greener. On the eastern side it has more extremes in terms of climate and it is dryer and hotter (or colder in winter).

We have folks from both sides so if you have questions, ask away.

Born and raised on farm in eastern WA. Moved to Seattle in 1972 to get rich quick. Gave up on that in 2010 and moved back to the dry side.

Pick a climate you like. Most field crops have to be irrigated most places in Eastern WA - rain does most if not all watering in west.

Acerage prices and parcel sizes are VERY dependant on where you are looking.

Seattle/Everett/Tacoma outvote the rest of the state so they get to decide politics and taxes for the rest of us. No income tax and not too bad property taxes compared to some places.
Gun laws aren't too bad and CWP just by applying. And we get to legally smoke.

Feel free to buy our place if you want to be here, now.

I was born in Western WA and have spent time there off and on. Was an army brat and have lived in several places (CA,OK,etc) Have lived in Eastern WA (Spokane) full-time since 1992. Washington is a beautiful state - but as mentioned it's really like two separate states. West side and east side are dramatically different geographically, climatically and politically. I prefer the eastern side, others like the western side - but if you do your due diligence you can find something that suits you. I live in town but own 20 acres 110 miles away in western MT - that's where we will eventually homestead - but WA state has alot to offer.

You've gotten many responses. Why did you ask the question?

Because I love western WA but the eastern kinda bores me. I was wondering what you have to do to get a plot of land on the west side

Simple answer... find what you like and buy it.

It depends on what you are looking for, the area and what you have to spend.

Around me (Darrington), the market is pretty slow so there are lots of parcels for sale. Many have been for sale for quite a while. There is a 5 acre cleared and flat parcel next to me with a well already in. In town there are small houses on little lots.

Think about it and tell us what you are looking for and where. We might be able to point you to something.

An arm and a leg or your first born child might do it.

Buy it cash, utilize a loan, get seller financing, or lease to own it... What part of Western WA interests you most? Sequim was our favorite area, so we moved here (that simple). This area fit our criteria better than any other one.

While western Washington is much more populated than the east side, there are still many rural areas where homesteading property is relatively inexpensive. I am in Wahkiakum County, which is on the Columbia River and spans the Coastal Range. Our population is about 4,000 . . . in the whole county. We are the second-least populated county in the state. Much of our county is timber land, so it will likely never be very populated.

There are parts of Lewis County and Pacific County that are equally rural and inexpensive. Lewis County is politically more conservative, and tends to be more "hands off" in terms of government. For me, the farther away from Seattle I can stay, the better; so, even though I love Puget Sound, I can never see myself living there as the Seattle influence is too strong.

When considering Washington, as others have said you have to decide on what you're looking for -- climate, population, politics, distance from cities. Chart out a few drives down the less-traveled 2-lane highways and find someplace that calls your name. There are still many places to homestead here.
