Elko bound?

We are facing a possible branch transfer to Elko, Nv.

What can Elko's resident HT-ers tell us about the area?

Zone? Growing season? Precipitation? Are chickens and rabbits allowed inside city limits?

We are coming from SW Wyo.

I lived in Elko for about 5 years. While it can snow in Elko, it isn't the deep freeze like Montana. During most winters the snow kind of comes and goes.

Elko is in the Great Basin, so water that falls there never leaves the basin. That makes for a terrific water table. Neighbors routinely got 30 to 40 gpm, although the wells are somewhat deep (maybe 150 feet).

Elko has a pretty stable economy, since it's largely based on gold mining.

Nearly half the residents of the area live south of town (over the hill) in Spring Creek. Views of the Ruby Mountains are terrific and there's a lot of land available. I lived in Ryndon, about 10 miles east of Elko.

I don't know much about the answers to your questions, but Elko is a great little city. They have a cowboy poetry festival every year that brings people from all over...it's a good time if you're into that kind of thing.
