Bought a nice Crome (?)waste can. Dome top, swing hinge. Used about 2 months, no receipt so cannot return.
Heard a (P0P). The opening just hangs and does not close back. Can this be fixed?ImageUploadedByHomesteading Today1421582843.156090.jpg

Sure but I'd have to see more to say how and if it's worth it. Looks like the bolts pulled out of the lid?

..................From your description it appears that , when the lid is closed there is NO tension on the spring , when the lid is opened you are Pushing against the spring........this is what causes the spring to close !
...................So , the "POP" occurred when one end of the spring broke it's connection to the hinge and will not close ! Remove the hinge and I'll bet you will immediately see where the connection came loose . With a little engineering I'm sure you can fabricate another mechanism much more robust than the 'Cheappie' that the canister came with . , fordy

Thanks.
Soooo I cannot reconnect that spring I did not realize it was broken. I thought I would just bend it back.
I will look for another spring.
Off to Lowe's.

I'm not sure the spring is broken, looks like it might just have slipped and come around

I think I'd try taking it back where I bought it on general principles. Is there any label left that might at least show it came from particular store? It shouldn't break so fast.

You can see at the bottom of the pic where the spring metal crystallized and broke. That looks like more than two months of rust on the screw ends unless there was acid in the can.

No acid. Prob rust. Can was at back door on porch. Not out in weather, but sheltered from rain.
Will go to Lowe's ASAP, hope to find new spring.

All you really need to do is see if you can un wind a coil and make a new end.

Can't tell so well from pic but looks like it snapped on the left side.

A decent sized dowel or screw drive in the center and then a large pair of needle nose
unwrap a coil and make it look like the end that broke.

To find a spring, you might have more luck at a small hardware store than a big box. Our small town hardware has all kinds of springs.
