Thumbs down Have To Look For New Source Of Firewood

Went to get a Permit to cut Firewood on Government Land. They gave me one but it is only Good until March 1 because they are stopping any cutting for now because of Endangered Species and they didn't know if later they are going to give anymore Permits.

Too bad you're not in my area. I've got a couple of giant white oaks that finally died after the beating they took in the ice storm.

I don't want them to go to waste but I'm having a heck of a time finding someone that wants them free if they cut them. Lots of folks would happily take them if I'd cut, split, haul and stack it for them though.

National forest used to be my firewood source as well. Then I bought 75ac of nothing BUT woods in 1982, and it's never been a problem since then.

Depending on what species they are trying to protect, there may be some Congressional action due to the last election. But anyway, never take a bureaucrat's word for any change. Sometimes an official will -gasp- exceed their authority.
I'd try writing you Congressman to ask him to check it out.

There's two things you can do - keep cutting after March until someone actually comes and stops you - tell them you have a permit - then when they look at it and say that it is only good until March tell them - jee I didn't realize that - always had a permit other years - second - buy your own land with a lot of trees on it-

If you have a whiskey barrel factory call and see if they sell the reject staves. Best kindling/firewood ever and lightweight enough for old folks like us to handle without throwing out our backs. If you can damper down your stove enough the staves burn longer and unless it's zero temps, the staves will burn almost like big wood.

Be glad they don't expect you to carry it in and light it for you as well.

Well me and my wife talked it over and decided to just heat with Gas, so I called him up and told him I wouldn't be cutting.

We have Barrel Plant down the road, use to burn stuff from there.

Might be able to clean up after Loggers.

But not in best of health, best get away from the wood.

I'm just the opposite, Rock, I'm using my Propane furnace-and wanting a wood furnace SO bad--but the $7000 is beyond my means. Have men that will cut wood here for nothing (my family) and Propane is running over $2000 a year-and thats with pre buy in summer! Propane prices scared me out last year, agreeable, its easier, at 77 years old now, but I think I can still handle wood.

I buy 8 foot oak logs for about $85 a cord delivered. Block them up, split them and stack them myself. I do the work for a couple hours a day and it gets done eventually.

Most winters I burn about 4 1/2 cords of split oak so it costs about $400 a year for heat. I don't want to think what the propane furnace would cost.

Sure is a good warm heat, isn't it? Nothing beats wood IMO.

For me too there is always the tension between being toasty warm, which is wonderful and needs the work of wood burning ,and being never quite warm because the amount of propane I would need to buy to get that would bankrupt me.

A true cord of firewood cut to length here is 300-350.00. My new wood stove will be here on the 26th and I likely will not need it till next December LOL. I still want to find a cord of mesquite and oak to have on hand as we do not have the wherewithal to cut and haul right now.

We do this for some friends occasionally - as long as the trees are not close enough to a building to damage. Between that and the dead or dying trees on our property (8 acres of hardwood), we haven't had to purchase wood in 27 years. I'm surprised you can't find anyone, have you tried advertising on Craigs list? If you have some of those people that sit by the roadside with loads of wood (when it's cold), stop by and ask some of them if they would come get your wood. After 2011 when we lost about 10 large oaks and didn't need any other wood, one of our friends did that and the guy got about 3 truckloads off of their property.

Find someone that would like to have their big woods cleaned up of the dead trees. It is what I do. And see if there is county land where cutting is allowed.

Lots of free wood around here. Only requirement is you have to be licensed, bonded, insured, and not drop it on the cheapskate's house.

Apply for HEAP home heating assistance. You are entitled to help with heating if you are handicapped or have a low income. Our tax dollars at work.

They need to stop the cutting around here!

I used to heat off the National Forest but now they are in there cutting anything. Large patches of woods are leveled, places where no cutting was even allowed are getting hit hard.

I do everything I can to get pics and videos to the USFS Rangers and LEO's but most of it seems to be going on while I'm at work.

My proposal is to ban possession of a chain saw on USFS property. Dead and down firewood cutting would be done by hand.
