Cedar Furniture Finish for Outdoor Use?

ImageUploadedByHomesteading Today1421008604.630470.jpg I am assembling 4 benchs for outdoor use here in the rainy PNW (although they will be stored indoors Nov-April). The wood is thin and I don't think it is the best quality. I don't care for the gray look of old untreated cedar outdoor furniture. Suggestions for stains or other treatments? Thank you.

I'd suggest Spar Varnish. Made for boats and outside uses. As to stain, most any oil based penetrating stain will work, but all will fade somewhat in direct sunlight.

Thanks, Tom. So, spar varnish, clear, then a clear semi-transparent cedar stain? Or ??? I have read just enough on websites to be confused. I won't be offended with a simple answer! Thanks.

Sikkens Cetol. Fabulous transparent look, with just enough color. It was originally designed for log homes, but I've used it on cedar siding, decks, railings, and outdoor furniture. It's expensive (about $60 a gallon when I last checked), and it requires three steps and two formulations (Cetol 1 for the first step and Cetol 2-3 for the second and third), but the result is fantastic.
