Haven't heard that. But not surprised, either. We tend to buy our eggs from locals with small flocks, often Amish or Mennonite.

What's going on? Avian flu? Major regulations kicking in? Companies finally giving up on price wars?

The local Aldi's had eggs for .79/limit 4 all summer. At Thanksgiving they lowered the limit to 2.

When I was in there last week I noticed there was a note on the egg case apologizing for the price of eggs....$1.29/limit 2.

Yes more regulations. Only so many birds per cage. They HAVE to have room to spread out their wings? Ya that is correct. So Fewer laying hens per cage means fewer laying hens to produce eggs without a major expansion to those huge chicken farms.

California passed some new laws on how much space must be available for each hen, so hence the price increase.

Frank Hilliker said they will have spent about a million dollars on the changes.
“A chicken basically has to be able to spread its wings, turn around, lie down, and do normal chicken activities without running into another chicken,” said Eric Larson the executive director with San Diego County Farm Bureau.
“People should expect to see the price of eggs go up in the neighborhood of 30 to 40 percent,” said Larson.
Prop 2 made the Hilliker family consider shutting down their 72-year-old egg farm.
“We were looking at the numbers thinking maybe we would have to shut down,” said Hilliker Ranch’s Tatiana Woliung.
The change sent egg suppliers in other states scrambling, too.
“Those out of state farmers also have to comply to California’s rules now too,” said Larson.

I've been in a few commercial layer houses. The conditions are disgusting. The overcrowding is one thing. The ammonia levels are blinding. Unchecked auto watering system malfunctions kill thousands. Grossly deformed feet from a life on wire, to the point many can't stand. I'm with Collegeboundgal. Maybe this will give humane homesteaders the ability to sell a superior product at a profit for a change. Mistreatment of animals and children is second class and a precursor of downfall. McDonalds will worry more about this than the average consumer.

When the bill was first passed I figured it would take egg prices up. A guy I use to work with, his dad owns a commercial layer operation. He told me he was faced with either spending a fortune to expand his facilities or reduce his flock be almost half.

Yeah, maybe I will be able to raise the price of my eggs to a profitable level.

So, I wonder if this will open the market to cheaper foreign produced eggs from countries that don't have to follow the new laws?

Look out world!! Will we be seeing eggs in our local Walmart that say, "Product of China" on them shortly? I already refuse to buy food with that label.

I feel bad for the older people around here as they depend of eggs for their protein in there diets. I know of a few that can't dig deeper to pay extra for anything.

it's sad in a way, we make the hens lives better, but we make some humans life more frazzled as how they are going to eat.

At least they are not as fat as turkeys have gotten so they have to do AI on them, the chickens are not that fat YET.

Great, I tried my hand at chickens for several years, but can't seem to overcome my predator problem and gave up. Looks like I'll be building a maximum security concrete coop soon!

Good! The way they pack those poor chickens into those cages is sadistic! Maybe we can't stop egg factories but at least those poor chickens will be able to stand up, turn around and stretch their legs.
Unfortunately, as SmokeEater2 and Bellyman were thinking, Made in (fill in third world country) eggs will probably take over.

I wonder if this will also send the price of chicken meat, or local live hens, way up, as well?

In all honesty, I haven't paid any attention to the price of eggs till a buddy retiree, mentioned that he was "shocked" on how much the price of eggs had skyrocketed within a week.
He said he thought it was a mistake so went to another store, then another till he discovered that the first store he was in was also the cheapest.......

Guess next time I buy eggs I'll have to check out the price paid....
