Wall Heater Shuts Off ?

My ventless propane wall heater shuts off after the main burner kicks in.
My first thought was the thermocouple so I replaced it.

If I light the pilot it will burn for hours no problem but once the main burner kicks in it will burn a minute or so then both the main and the pilot will go out.
Any Ideas?

Does it have a low oxygen sensor?

What model is it?

Does it have an oxygen sensor on it? (Newer....)

Do you have a good propane supply? (Big tank, little, other loads on the supply, tank outside I hope how cold is it, etc)

I use a 500 gallon tank that's over half full and 3/4 inch supply lines.

Tell me about oxygen sensors and how to check one?

Don't know how to check them, but they are designed to shut down the burn if the oxygen level in the room is depleted.

Correct about the sensor. Only way you can check that I know of, put the stove somewhere where it gets all the oxygen it wants and see if the problem is corrected. I had this issue in a greenhouse.

My furnace has a flame sensor. If it doesn't detect a flame when it thinks there should be one, it cuts off the gas. Could be something of that nature. Whatever it is, it sounds like some kind of safety cutoff. If you know the model number you should be able to look up the manual online if you don't have one, to find out what sensors it has.
fordy and michael ark like this.

Something shutting off the gas valve. Look at what safety switches are before the gas valve. You can jumper out each one out and find what is keeping it from burning.

ours would not start sometimes as the jet nozzle needed cleaning.

My daughters heater had a small regulator in the line going to the heater. It wouldn't stay lit until I tapped the regulator with blunt end of screwdriver(lightly). I believe the regulator was stuck. went on to work correctly for 2 years now.

Your oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) could be tripping due to high altitude. As altitude increases the air thins out, so the ODS thinks the oxygen content has dropped. Generally, ventless heaters aren't used at high altitudes because of nuisance tripping.

I used one when I lived in Elko, NV where the altitude was about 5,000 ft and didn't have any trouble. Manufacturers warn at 4,500 ft but I've heard of them being used at up to 6,000 ft.

Look to see if the air holes on the pilot are clean.
