Wink Recommendations for water pumps, please!

Our home farm has municipal water, but we would like to get our existing well up & running with a hand pump to water our livestock & gardens this summer. The existing well was motorized & the previous owner says the motor went out. (I guess it did--- everything is there & in good shape; just no water!) Before we begin to take the old casing apart & exploring, I want to get some info on pumps. I have read about Bison & Simple Pumps. Anyone have any advice? AND, has anyone gone to a handpump (no electric) for farm use? Is it worth it? THANKS and Happy New Year!

Find out the specs on the well before you do anything. Original driller should have them or the state/county if the well had to be registered. You're looking for depth drilled, static water level and flow.

If you are considering watering "gardens" with a hand pump, I would strongly suggest that you instead go with getting your well up and motorized again. Watering gardens with a hand pump such as a Bison (which I have) would be agonizingly labor intensive.

Post some pics of the motorized setup that is not functioning and I will review same to see if I think it is salvageable.

I like the Simple Pump because it can be motorized pretty easily so you have the best of both worlds. I don't have one, but know a few people who do.

There are sand point driven tiny wells 10 to 25 feet deep with a 2 inch pipe; there are 8 inch across drilled deep wells 800 feet deep; there are bored wells 3 feet across and 20-70 feet deep.

There are submersible pumps, jet pumps, piston pumps.

The water in your well may accumulate slowly over a whole day and stay kinda low in the well. Or it may gush in at 800 gallons a minute and come up to within 40 feet of the surface.

Each combination of those 3 things would require a bit different way of approaching how to get water out of the well, or what one could even consider. We can't cover every possible combination for you.......

You really, really, really need to describe exactly what you have. There are some really good well folk on this site, but you need to give them the info on what you have, what was there, do you still have live electricity nearby, is any of the pressure tank or piping still around, etc.

If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about that is ok, we can talk you through all that, and as mentioned a picture would be worth a lot.

But just saying, you will need to answer a lot of questions first, before you will get a useful answer that helps your exact situation.

And yes, if you want to hand pump water to water a garden, you will be able to compete in the weight lifting competitions because you will be putting a -lot- of work into that endeavor....
