ATTN: Doctor Moms

I'll just put this here because it's a popular board. (mod's feel free to move)

My 13 yr old son had a rash on his cheek bone area, as with all teen-age kids they get a little acne, but this is a rash of some sort.

Last week (12/17) the doctor prescribed MINOCYCLINE http://www.drugs.com/minocycline.html

After a few days he complained of a side aches, I blew it off as he was a little constipated. Now, come Monday (12/29) he took the pill, then took his shirt off. He had small blisters on both fore arms, by 9:00 PM, they were dime size.
No more medicine, on Wednesday (12/31) his blisters were gone, but the water moved to his knees, and can't hardly walk. today it is in his foot and still in his knees.

Back history: He has never had any doctor prescribed meds, and we followed the directions to the T.

Anyone ever experienced this situation?

Did the doctor diagnose acne as the cause of the rash?

Was the antibiotic for acne?

Have you called the doctor to discuss the blisters and fluid accumulation?

Did they do a culture?

No, we tried all the over the counter stuff, my wife washed his face every night. In the cheek bone area, is most likely a bacteria infection, hence the trip to see the doctor.

YES, sent a E-mail, got a call back, to stop the meds, < I did that prior to the call, Doctor said to take Benadryl, until the swelling goes down.>

Did they do a culture?
I bet they do when he goes back, But as of tonight, He's still in tough shape still with his feet swelling up
I will take him back monday~or sooner at this point.

Minocycline can have some serious side effects. If they told you to give him benadryl they're suspecting an allergy. Also, minocycline can cause "adverse effects" in pediatric patients (as well as adults, but more so in peds patients). I would insist on him being seen when you are able to get him back in to see the MD.

Are you giving him the Benadryl? Has it gotten better? Worse? Both complaints you listed are known side effects and should get better now that he has stopped the medication. Benadryl will help speed along recovery. Half-life is about 15 hours for minocycline, so he should be feeling better in a day or so.

Hope this helps.

BTW make sure to always let health care professionals know that he is allergic to this drug. Sometimes side effects manifest worse the next time he comes in contact with that medication.

I'm not a doctor, and I'm not diagnosing, but: I would ask the Doctor about: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-c...n/con-20024185
And especially if he is active in sports or wrestling.....

Just my own opinion.

Kids who play contact sports, including wrestling, can pick up stuff from each other, or from the mats. Did your boy have chicken pox? The aching on his side and rash locations sound similar to shingles. Yes, kids get that, just not that often. Back to teh doctor by all means.

I would consider it an allergic reaction to the medication, which can happen. It doesn't mean the meds were bad or they are bad for everybody but they certainly are bad for your son.

It might be a good idea to consult with your doctor about a medic alert bracelet.

Thanks for asking, All the swelling in the knee's are gone, but he is still complaining about pain in the knees. I would guess might take a few days for that.
Yikes, the next time I might have to monitor him a little better at first.

I hope your son is doing better. Yeah, from your description, it sounds like he's allergic to the meds. My sister had a similar reaction when she was given penicillin. If the rash is still there or comes back, try using some otc antibiotic ointment, like Neosporin. I usually try that first (applied night and day) and if I don't see any improvement after a day or two, I call the doc. So far, I haven't had to call. If you suspect a fungal infection, try Lotrimin. Hope that helps.
