Alright all

My wife and I lived in AVL, NC for a year in 2003-04 and miss the south dearly. So I am here to pick ya'lls brain on your state and where to find a good area to live (foothills or mountains preferred)

Currently in Indiana, wife is soon to be a nurse and I fight fire. two kids 9 and 7. Country folk. So where on the forum is the best place to find out some info from some good ole 'Mericans?

We are leaning toward, NC, TN, KY so far. WV, SC, GA, MO TX, OK not at all ruled out by me.

So lets hear your thoughts on why one is better than other(s)

Every place has it's pros and cons. I am in NE Oklahoma so not really any mountains or foothills here. I like the people, they are polite and helpful without being pushy. Land prices are generally good. Taxes aren't awful. Not a lot of interference on what you want to do for the most part. Soil varies tremendously - some areas are quite rocky with thin soil cover. Some areas are suffering drought conditions even now. However - there are some areas where all of the above is absolutely not true, so you need to check the locality carefully. Can be very hot and humid in the summer. Winters are generally relatively mild but we've had a couple of humdingers (for the South!)

we live in the foothills of NC, we have four seasons....although it can be hot in the summer, we also have the other three seasons....it is not Asheville, for sure....weather wise...

there is property available which is still not out of sight money wise....lots of older farmers have children that do not want to live that lifestyle...Buncomb county and the surrounding ones are much more expensive..

I think finding a community of like minded individuals is the best, and that is harder to establish when you are new to an area.....or retirees....good luck.....

if you need employment, then that will dictate some of your location, maybe all of it...we do live in an economically depressed region...although the medical field may offer options here that others don't have..most of the fire depts are volunteer ones, so that may not offer income...

I am from IL, my hubby from FL but we now live in east TN and I would never leave here. People are great, mostly all Christian, conservative down home folks. The wages aren't great but the cost of living is low. We have four seasons most of the time, it depends where you are.
