That N. Korea movie

I was just hearing on the television that the movie would open in many theatres and got to thinking. What if Sony set the whole thing up as a sales promotion? It would not be all that difficult to lead us to believe that NK did it....while Sony got away with the whole thing and made an extra zillion bucks at the same time. This story also distracts from all of the real crisis going on in the world right now.

It's not impossible, but if it's true they should fire that marketing director. More people will probably see this film than would have otherwise (not me for sure), but I'm guessing I'm not the only one who is more disgusted with Hollywood in general and Sony in particular after all this even if they do actually show the film....

I would believe that th star of the show would do that, of he had total control of such things. It would be in his nature to do that....

But he does not have near that much control. And Sony wouldn't do it. They got caught with their pants down when their security broke down, and were looking to save their short term rear end.

That backfired and blew up on them as even Hollywood turned on them for their decision and again thinking to cover their rear they are turning it into a bit of a in your face type of deal, marketing what clearly will be a mediocre to less movie in some theaters and to audience that normally wouldn't have viewed it.

Will be interesting how it plays out from here, people will not like Seth's sense of humor, it is a rather different look at things that he has. With NK release more data or crate more spying because the movie is going to be released? See how it plays out.

I suspect this thread will get moved to the general area.....

Paul

Have no desire to see it at all, its stupid and in poor taste to make a film about assassinating a real countries living ruler, no matter who it is.
They could have made the same exact movie with a fictitious country and ruler.

It wasn't a gimmick. I know people in the industry and from the reaction there, it is pretty obvious that it was a fear reaction that caused the pull. Sony is not William Castle.

Not a very smart gimmick since it got all the major theater chains to cancel their showings.

It certainly got a lot of publicity for the film. No amount of free publicity has managed to make it look like something I'd pay to see.

The Sony hack has been the talk of the industry, but the sequence that led to the pulling of "The Interview" doesn't appear to be as much Sony's doing as part of the booking wars that happen in Hollywood.

Sony initially planned to release the movie. Concern by the circuits for public safety and liability concerns undoubtedly made it waver.

December 17 - Carmike Cinemas publicly decided to not honor the playdates:
http://c272342.r42.cf1.rackcdn.com/C...e%20vFinal.pdf
The film buyer there is John Lundin, CEO is David Passman, COO Fred Van Noy. These three would have been involved in that decision. Carmike is a conservative oriented circuit with a base in the rural south.

The following day, AMC (A Chinese owned Company {China has ties to North Korea}) Regal (controlled by right-wing Philip Anschutz) followed suit, along with Cinemark, and Cineplex Entertainment. Source: The Right-Wing Billionaire Who Bowed to North Korea over

The loss of those top five circuits and playdates was a major blow to any possible financial success to the movie. It is akin to a fashion designer bringing out a new line of clothing and finding the top five retailers refusing to show or sell it. Sony at that point tried the financially prudent thing - to pull the film for release at a later date. That is a technique that has been used before.

Step in the public and media furor, and the comment by Obama, and suddenly NOT releasing it was no longer a viable option.

HERE is where it gets interesting. Sony released the movie ONLINE the day prior to the release to the movie theatres willing to show it. That is unprecedented, and because of the brou-ha-ha the online sales are going to be significantly large; large enough for studios to consider direct to online releases in the future, cutting out the theatre circuits. For moviegoers, 'patriotic duty' to see 'The Interview' - Dec. 25, 2014

Carmike, in particular, made a horrible strategic error. In pulling the film based on perceived terrorist threats (as if there were millions of North Korean terrorists in the rural south That N. Korea movie - Homesteading Questions) it has encouraged the enmity of Sony and the conservative rural southerners that it serves.

AMC, once the ice was broken, was to be expected to pull the film based on China's ties with North Korea. That is what you get when foreign corporations hold strings.

With Regal, Anschutz comes across as a putz even if he was not fully involved in the decision.

While the Sony hack was a debacle, the charge to the rear led by Carmike was a disaster for the major theatre circuits. Getting sidetracked by perceived threats may have resulted in a major battle lost against on-demand digital.

Downloaded the movie today and watched it. I really don't like Seth Rogan. I can see why that fat little dictator is ------. I guess the truth hurts. All in all it sucked.

If Sony would have faked it, I'm sure they wouldn't have released the racist e-mails from the Execs concerning Obama and what kind of movies he would have liked...

Maybe something ala Snowden? -

One such expert, Kurt Stammberger from the Norse cybersecuirty firm, told CBS News that his team believes a woman identified only as “Lena” was heavily involved in the hack – not North Korea.
“We are very confident that this was not an attack master-minded by North Korea and that insiders were key to the implementation of one of the most devastating attacks in history,” he told the news outlet.

Patriotic duty or not, I wouldnt waste time nor money on this movie. My money, my time, my choice. Pretty obvious it is just a sophomoric stoner movie just from the ads they have been showing. Sooner watch Green Acres reruns and those are pretty darn stupid time wasters.....
