has anyone used one of these to check stock or the lay of the land/crops? if I could get one hooked up to a monitor that would be a great help!!

You have to remember, to stay legal, the aircraft must remain in your eye sight... Flying it out of sight and using the camera to watch where you're going is illegal..

$1200 to get in, more or less. Less and it won't do much, more and the camera control and wireless video options get better.

Radio Shak had a very mini unit for sale on Black Friday, $40, tiny so very hard to fly, a fixed camera so can't really aim it, no remote video need to use a micro card, and only flys 5 minutes. But it is neat to play with and see if the concept works at all for you, and if you can fly those time micro units the bigger useful ones will be easy to fly.

I don't have enough land to make it worth the trouble. I love to tinker with such things. I can definitely see the value for those at have a gazilion acres. Actually, I'm glad I don't have one. If I couldn't go out, even in the nastiest weather, and check the animals, I wouldn't bother to keep them.

drone is just another tool Awnry and it aint fun trying to find runaway cows in a thousand acre corn field . I do have the land and the stock plus the need to find missing animals both here and abroad. plane spooks them as do choppers (not to mention the expense1!) an eye in the sky gives a different prospective and after 40+ years of checking stock, both mine and others, will take any edge I can find!

With that much private farm land to cover maybe there might be Canadian exemptions to flying a drone out of your sight over your own property. Maybe you can find out here if you qualify for a permit, they have a page to go to to find out about exemptions and permits.

We live in rural Kansas. My sons were splitting firewood and a small drone flew right over their heads, turned and made another pass to check them out..... turns out there is an ag service in our area that uses one. Met the guy at the gas station and told him if it flew within sight over my property again, he would need a new one.
As I understand it, they are supposed to stay over the property of their clients. They were just practicing in my area....
