Another Boot Question?

Ok for most my life in the woods I have found my feet wet. I actually wore out a pair of Leather Boots in one month Turkey hunting. Water disintegrated them.

If it isn't mud and snow, it is dew on the grass and getting across shallow springs.

I'm thinking Camo Muck Boots. Should they hold up rough rocky terrain? Oh I'm thinking Unlined because bulk of time not that cold.

Did you treat your boots with mink oil before getting them wet?

I treat all mine with Neats Oil. Most hold up all except the soul but my feet still get wet.

Rock,

It sounds like your boots are staying wet and are essentially rotting before they can wear out. How many pairs of boots do you have? Buy at least 2 pairs, treat them with mink oil (or neatsfoot oil,) and alternate them. This lets them dry out every other day. I have done this and have had my boots last significantly longer.

When I was a lot younger and lived in Germany, we'd buy these hiking boots made by Meindl.... We called them "freak" boots, because those of us that wore them were called "freaks" We were the Rock and Roll people.. the ones that drank, smoked and all that..

Anyway, they weren't water proof, so we'd take them and dip them into pots of melted wax... We'd buy big candles and melt them down and dip the boots into that... We'd let it soak in a bit..

Hen we'd take them out and scrape them down, and take a heat gun to them and melt the rest in.. They'd stay waterproof for months..

Just giving you an idea if you want to stay with leather..

Other wise, this is what I wear when I'm out hunting or tripping through the woods,.. No idea what others call them, but I call them duck boots.. Mine aren't actual Duck brand, or LL Bean, but they are the same as far as leather uppers, and rubber lowers.. mine are insulated, the one's below aren't.. Mine have a much heavier lug than these..

Ditto the links from Simi. And ditto your own thoughts on unlined. They can get miserable when temps are above 50. They are awesome at freezing and below, though.

Even better than Neats foot or Mink oil is Sno-Seal. You put the clean boots in the oven for 20 minutes or so on very low (I mean you can hold your hand in the oven for many seconds and not get burned low). Then pull them out and apply the SnoSeal very thoroughly. Then back in the oven they go for 20 minutes or so more.
Repeat this every few months, with 2 pairs rotated is even better.

Or do what I do- go with your gut instinct of muck boots. I wear plain cheap ones during the non-cold months. Then for this time of year, I have a pair of the Bog Brand neoprene winter muck boots. I don't know how well they hold up long term, but they are my go to every day boot right now for horse and chicken care, along with anything else around the homestead.

Muck boots are good but check out the Bogs, I love mine - Much more comfortable.
