What water to oatmeal ratio?

I'm going to set up a small ricemaker on an electric timer to automatically make oatmeal in the early morning. What ratio of water to steel-cut (Scotch) oats should I use?

I use rolled oats---2 water to one oats. I reckon it would be the same. If they're too thick add more water. No biggie.
brosil, Kmac15 and PNP Katahdins like this.

I'm with Farmer Willy on this one. A good rule of thumb is one part dry food to two parts water. This works for oatmeal, rice, beans, ect.

Peace,
Curtis

The other question is whether you need to use the cooker. If you add hot water and soak it overnight, then in the morning bring to the boil and simmer five minutes, that will do it.

Alternatively, you can look up thermos cookery, and do it that way.

The stovetop directions for Scottish oats calls for a 1:3 ratio. I microwave mine, so I use less water since it has less time to boil out.

It came out great. My husband makes it a point of pride not to cook. He once burnt the toast to a blaze three times in a row. In the same hour. I sometimes joke with him "Could you pass me the salt, or is that too much like cooking for you?". And I am not a morning person, while he and my son have to be up early. So an electric timer is perfect.

I use 4 parts water to 1 part steel cut oats (one of the reasons why I purchase steel cut as opposed to rolled). I bring them to a boil at night, remove from heat and cover with a tight lid. Just warm them in the morning and they're good to go.

I am glad what you tried worked well for you.
I eat organic full rolled oats and my sweet wife does them most mornings or I do them. We use 2.5 cups water per cup of oats. They are a bit soupy right after cooking them but in just a few minutes they soak up the water and are lovely.

quiches might work for you and they warm up in the microwave pretty well. I love them dh doesn't. gurr. How can anyone not like pie crust and eggs?!

I am not a morning person and brunch is as early as it gets otherwise it is warm up leftovers from night before or whatever you find.

We do not use pie crusts. We use hash browns.
This is totally great fresh or warmed up.
For my sister who can't have potatoes we make it with shredded sweet potatoes. It is yummy that way too.

Hash Brown Quiche
Makes 2 large pie plates

32 oz. bag of frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
1 stick of butter, melted, divided
4 cups shredded cheese (I used 3 cheddar blend by Kraft)
1 lb. roll of Bob Evan’s Original sausage
8 eggs
A little salt & pepper
2 cups cottage cheese

Press hash browns between paper towels to remove excess moisture. Grease two large pie plates with 2 teaspoons of melted butter in each. Press the hash browns onto the bottom and up the sides of the pie plates. Drizzle with the remaining butter. Bake, uncovered, at 425 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes or until edges are browned.
While crust is baking, brown/cook sausage in a frying pan on the stove. When meat is thoroughly cooked, combine shredded cheese and meat and spoon into crusts. In a bowl, beat the eggs, cottage cheese, salt, pepper, and any other seasonings: pour over meat and cheese.
Reduce heat to 350 degrees. Bake uncovered for 30-40 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.
Note: This recipe is really fun to play with. You can substitute any kind of meat or cheese. You can add veggies too. Pepper Jack cheese would be great.
