JUST in !! MAJOR RECALL !!
On my local louisville news this morning. "remington has announced a major recall of americas most popular rifle, the remington 700. The recall will address the notorious malfunctioning triggers that have plagued this model for years!"
Just 'cause you need to know!

there's some more reading about it on Fish & Game's site. Sounds like it applies to every mod 700 ever produced. Ouch.

Remington 700s had the best out of the box trigger pull in the industry for years, at least until the Savage Accutrigger. I hope the replacements don't mess up that.

They've updated the article to point out that it is not a true recall. Remington is offering to replace the trigger for anyone who wants it. Which, if you think about it, is not that unusual in the firearms industry.
With pretty much any currently made firearm, from any manufacturer, if you send one of their products in with a complaint that the (unmodified, factory-original) trigger is performing in an unsafe manner, they are going to repair/replace the fire-control components at no cost, regardless of warranty status. It's a liability hedge.
The difference here, it sounds like, is that Remington is agreeing to replace your trigger even if it is not performing improperly, just for asking.

I have had a R51 in the factory for over three months for a total replacement. No word yet as to when it may be returned.

Dh is gonna be MAD when he gets home from opening deer day this evening. He purchased one of these from Dick's Sporting Goods on Black (Thursday night) Friday after waiting 2 hours b/c "it's company policy to call in all background checks even if you have a permit to carry" and it has been on voluntary recall since April earlier this year! He was sold a recall gun and hasn't even shot it yet. "we don't take back guns once they leave the store." Guess Dick's is crossed off the hunting list now.

My FIL bought me a slightly used 770 that I used to kill my first deer this season. I really like the gun, but I read some things online shortly thereafter that made me a little nervous. Also the manual has a section regarding how the trigger should behave and doesn't appear to accurately describe the action of my trigger. It seems that some of these rifles may have a different trigger already installed, or possibly the previous owner may have had it replaced, or my trigger is completely unsafe and may be waiting to kill my children. Knowing there may be an issue makes me more careful with the gun, but it would be nice to have this cleared up in my mind.

I have a Rem 700 that I bough in 1970. It's never fired unless I flipped off the safety and pressed the trigger. But I saw it happen once, to a friend's Rem 700. So I know it can happen. He wanted to unload the rifle but to do so you have to flip the safety to "FIRE" before you can open the bolt. When he did that the rifle fired. Fortunately he had it pointed in a safe direction. And I think that is the key to being safe with any firearm. All the people who got killed or injured by these rifles going off when they shouldn't got shot because somebody else had their rifle pointed at them when it went off.
I'm going to watch this issue closely, and get a new trigger in my rifle when I see what's the best thing to do. Since watching that "accidental discharge" happen, and hearing about this problem for years, I've always been a bit spooked about that rifle.

In LEO firearms instructor school back in the early 80's They recommended certain firearms for LEO use. They warned that 2 models of S&W auto pistols( models 17,37 or 19&39. I don't remember now.) would start firing when you dropped the slide to chamber a first round. We had a guy that had one and he had an individual instructor any time we were on the range to insure everyone's safety. Sure enough! Slapped a new clip in and dropped the slide and dumped 5 rounds into the concrete in front of him.
I think many safety issues remain unreported.

Up-date
Remington has issued a formal statement yesterday that stated that this is "NOT a recall, but it is a court settlement".
Not sure of the difference as they will replace the trigger, no matter what they call it.

Just a reminder- it ain't ever a good idea to have one in the chamber unless you've got the muzzle pointed at a valid target.
And that goes for every manufacturer's weapon.

I was looking for a replacement for the 50 year ole Remington 740 that I got as a teen and it was a toss up between the 700 and the Ruger American. I took the Ruger home but I'll always like the Remingtons also.
