I've noticed the decline in popularity over the years. The traditional fruit recipe takes a lot of raisins and is almost too dense. Since a lot of the joy is in the spices, the mince mix cuts well with pears or apples. Home canning mincemeat used to be fairly common.

Mince is easy to make. Just put together and let sit in the refrigerator before making pie or tarts. We can 60 quarts of mincemeat using venison....James

5 lbs ground venison and 2 lbs fatty ground pork, 5 qts chopped apples 2 lbs seedless raisins 1 lb cranberries) 2 qts apple cider 1 whole large orange, zest first, peel and chopped very small 2 tbsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp ground nutmeg 5 cups dark brown sugar or molasses 2 tbsp salt Makes about 7 quarts.

Edited, we do not use the orange peel, just wanted to make clear.

Mince meat can always be stretched with dried apples.
