LED heat lamp

Do they make led heat lamps? Would like to use a heat lamp but the old ones are so famous for fires

I'm sure someone will eventually come up with one using IR LEDs, but it is kinda like asking for a stove to be made of ice. Heat from a heat lamp is the energy in the infrared part of the spectrum. LEDs are efficient precisely because they DON'T have significant emissions below visible light.

There are bulbs that are advertised as being less dangerous, if you need the light and the heat: http://www.premier1supplies.com/deta...682&cat_id=173

Or, if you need just heat but not light, there are ceramic bulbs marketed for reptiles that might ease your fears:http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiC...eramic+emitter

With either option, you still have to take precautions to ensure that the heat source can't come into contact with flammable materials.

There are also heat panels on the market: http://www.jefferspet.com/products/k...%2f2014+LIV+BB

If you setup good draft protection and use foil-bubble-bubble-foil for reflecting the heat you can use a low wattage bulb instead of the dangerous high wattage heat bulbs. You can even get away with no bulb at all if you simply do a deep bedding pack which composts generating heat. That's how we do it. We're in the mountains of northern central Vermont. We farrow piglets year round here. No barn. No heat lamps. Used them years ago but they waste energy and are too dangerous.

I've been thinking of Heat Light for Baby Chicks in the Spring but rethinking I believe it would be best to hatch later and use regular light.
