We have a squirrel near down
And I have two concerned children. The entire nest seems to have fallen from the tree and hit the ground. There are a couple of babies in it - they aren't terribly small but I didn't poke around too much and I don't really know what to look for.
Now what? I can't keep it on the ground of the dog will get into it. Do I move it? Will momma come back?

Put it back up in the tree and mama should find them. Check them later to make sure. They are loud when hungry or upset.

What are the rules about keeping squirrels in your area? I'd say, if it was me I'd be tempted to raise them as pets if it were legal in my area... for all the trouble they cause me, they are awful cute.

Well the tree is like 4,000 feet tall. Should I just put it in any tree I can reach that's close and as far off the ground as I can reach on a ladder ?

Oh no.
If I can't milk it, if it doesn't lay eggs, provide protection or not for meat it's not welcome to stay.
Sorry. I have enough crap to do. I can't take on another several mouths to feed.

my boys have done this a few times, one time they raised the babies very very fun and the squirrels are still around and come for nuts and fruit, they have also put the nest as high and as close as possible to the tree they came from.

The last time that I had squirrel babies fall from the tree,
I just set the nest up on the roof of a nearby shed.
The mama found them before too long.

We have a squirrel near down
We have fostered dove babiess, possum babies, squirrel babies, grackle babies, you name it... My daughter was like Dr. Doolittle! Except, it really ends up Mom's chore... The kids mean well, and it is great to foster an appreciation for the lesser animals, but it ends up that you'll be doing a large part of the chores. And some of those replacement milk recipes get expensive. :-/
If at all possible - put the nest back up somewhere in (preferably, the original) tree and hope for the best for them!
By and large, we were quite successful, but you are then making a wild animal without foraging skills, without their tribe's social skills, and who does not have a natural fear of humans...

Squirrels are destructive, that's like saving any rodent because they are cute, bad idea, feed them to your cats, good lesson for the kids.

my boys did the teaching with the babies as soon as they saw other babies leaving the nest they would take the babies out side and let them learn by doing and watching it worked for them the youngsters made friends and the mothers of the others would come and watch and visit even groom but did not take the lost babies back when they went back to their nests. The lost babies would come back to the make shift nest and wait for the boys, at about 6 months I they would go off for days at a time come back to visit then go off again. they will come visit every so often to get treats and off they go again. And yes it was a lot of work when they first fell. And just like any newborn it took everyone pitching in to bottle feed. And I do agree if kept as a caged pet then its for life.

Yep, just be sure your kids understand the reason they are being fed to the cats... they wouldnt make their beds! (or whatever issue you are having to deal with your kids about)

Red squirrels are destructive, never had a problem with gray or black ones.
