Deer lips
There is a doe living in the hollow down below. I catch her *spying* on me (for lack of a better term) quite often and frequently, she'll come right out in the open and just watch me. She doesn't seem alarmed or upset. She just watches me, eats a bit, watches some more, eats some more, etc.
This evening, however, I noticed her flapping her lips or doing something with her lips while watching me. It was far enough between bites ( :haha: ) that i doesn't think she was eating.
?
What is this lip thing about? It was very noticeable and odd.

From what I have observed horses doing I would suggest she may be clearing her nose to better understand what your all about.

Hmmmm! That would make sense.
::lightbulb::
Esp. because I think she's not exactly sure what I am. Except she knows I'm not a deer.

The thing in horses you are referring to is called a phlegmen response. Stallions often do it around mares. I think the latest opinion is that it enhances the sense of smell. Maybe she was trying to get a better whiff to see if you were a predator!

I see Bulls doing that when they are looking over the fence at the other cows. In fact when I was a young lad I think I done the same thing a time or two. Of course I got in trouble for it!!!

Ah. Good.
*whew*
For a minute there, I was getting kind of nervous that I was fixing to get a half crazed buck charging me and kicking me to death as soon as he got horns.
Now I can go back to living in semi-perfect symbiosis with my toads and frogs and skinks and bumblebees and lovely curious doe in the hollow.

This doesn't have anything to do with antlers or deer lips, but all that Texas talk reminded me of a joke I heard the other day.
There was this fellow from East Texas who had a flat tire. He pulled off on the side of the road, jumped out of his car, walked down the hillside and picked a bunch of wildflowers, and proceeded to put one bouquet of the flowers in front of the car and one behind it. Then he got back in the car to wait.
A passerby studied the scene as he drove by and was so curious he turned around and went back. He asked the fellow what the problem was. The man replied, "I have a flat tarr." In response the passerby asked, "But what's with the flowers?"
The man responded, "When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back! I never did understand it neither."

She's trying to catch your smell. I bowhunt a lot and have seen this many times. A buck will perform phlegmen but usually it is during the rut when they are trying to catch the scent of a doe in heat. I was setting in a tree stand over a scrape one afternoon had one come in under the stand and did this. Goats will do the same thing when the rut starts. (A Lot) My .02.

It hit me after I got in bed last nite. She is sending you 'deer esp'. She is saying 'get in your car, so I can come eat all the goodies in your yard, get in the car, get in the car....."

:haha: :haha:
I was just out looking for her.
But they're haying across the road (they do it early morning and late evenings because it's too hot the rest of the day --- hey, this may be Oklahoma, but we're downright Mediterranean in our habits around here! :haha: ) And she doesn't like the haying noise.
