Weird Stuff Found in Brush Clearing
So, I'm clearing out some brush to put up a fence (this brush has been there since I've owned the property, probably hasn't been cut in decades) and I'm finding a few oddities.
First, there is a weird pipe thing. It's about 4 feet tall. What do you think? Sprinkler? Gas?
There's also a strange cement pit. There's too much growth over it now to get a good picture, but I'll post one soon. Could be an old building foundation, or storm shelter.

Hmm, could be. I've been told there used to be a trailer there years ago. So septic tanks have pipes sticking up?

My guess is that's a gas riser. Probably had a propane tank around at one time.

Looks like a water pipe to me. Wonder about the paint though. Looks pretty fresh. Dig down and see which way the pipe goes. Do you have NG to the property?

What paint? That's rust, with a yellow ribbon tied on top. As far as I know, I own all the mineral/gas rights.

Strike a match and remove the cap. Let us know what happens.

My son just told a guy that last week at their work. Thee kid did it! That's too dangerous to joke around about. Too many people wouldn't know it's a prank.

How about checking to see if there is a dig help line to call. In Alaska we have phone number to call BEFORE digging to locate underground lines where we plan to dig.
They check maps and come out with testing equipment and inform us of what and where stuff is to prevent problems... it is free to use as it is a state deal funded as a fee...added tax on one's ultily bills monthly.

if you stand to one side, and tape a candle to a 3ft branch and hole it lit over the hole, youll find out whether its gas or not. AND you wont get hurt. Thang is, IF it is gas, shutting it off might be a problem. Take the cap off and smell of it. That will tell you a lot. IF you still cant tell for sure, take the cap off, and rep[lace it with a gate valve. Put a extension onto it up at least 9in. Then put the candle over it with the valve open. IF it is gas, and it wont quit, turn off the valve.
BUT, IF you can take the cap loose, and there is no pressure escaping as you do so, and you can smell of it. There wont be any pressure, and so there wont be any length of fire IF it does light.

Be very careful around found pipes. The last person around here that found one disappeared on us, never to be seen again: Interesting discovery on the farm.

I'm at work now; can't wait to go home and investigate. Didn't have time to yesterday.
I'm more interested in the cement pit. Going to try to clear enough brush off this afternoon to see what's down there. I'm hoping for mason jars full of money, but I'd settle for anything that's not snakes.

Could be a vent pipe from a buried fuel oil tank.

Could it possibly be an old property line marker?

I doubt it. There is some old rusty fencing that follows the current property lines; makes me feel the boundaries haven't changed, and this pipe is close to the center of the property.

Yes. Some sort of metal cap.

I believe I would dig down to see what it's connected to before I took the cap off.
