Barn lighting questions

I am wanting to put lights in my barn that don't require electricity. I was wanting to see how others are doing this.

I don't need light in there all the time just when needed, especially in the fall when the clocks go back and it's dark at 4:40pm

I was thinking a couple of outdoor solar flood lights, mounting the panels outside and running the wires inside to the lights.

Maybe someone has a better idea, let me know what ya got. Thanks

Dad had 1 kerosene lantern, which I have now, and which was likely either granddads, or my grandmas first husband. He died in 06. Ours is/was, as I assume its still standing a 60sq barn with 2 stories, and he took it to everywhere he went in the barn. We got electric in 48, so Only when they shut us off for not paying the bill did I see it used.

My ex and I had a small solar lite from Northern Tool Company. It had a switch inside the barn to turn it on/off. It was really useful on Winter nights that we had to keep a fire in the barn to keep our bunnies warm.

When grew up on the farm, over 60 years ago, we had electric lights in both the Cow barn and the Tobacco barn. In Winter time we always did our milking with the lights on, night and morning.
And, we had to take down the tobacco down out of the barn, for stripping and grading, using the Electric lights too.
We could not have got any of our Chores done in Winter time without the Electric Lights. And that was in the 1950's.

Since you got a good answer.....

When I first read this thread I had to smirk - solar lights use electricity too, so you would have to go with candles or something!

Another thing you might consider is wiring traditionally and using a small Honda generator to power the lights as needed. They are quiet, efficient, easy to crank, require no batteries, and work no matter how many cloudy days you've had in a row. They come in handy during ice and other storms also.
