...........Lewis and Clark Origional Journals with their spelling as written ! , fordy

..............Well , the link won't connect with the U. of Nebraska for whatever reason ! Anyway , there are over 5,000 pages of the original Journals as well all field notes , drawings and maps for those interested . The website is very easy to find with a google search . , fordy

The creek that ran on the boundry of our farm and on my Uncle Milt and Aunt Berts farm was called independence Creek. Nobody knew why when I was a kid.
The reason was that it was there at where the creek flows into the Missouri that L&C made camp on 4th July 1805

I would have loved to be a fly on their packsaddle... but those journals are the next best thing. Thanks!

Y'know, it really wasn't THAT long ago Lewis and Clark traveled a pristine wilderness... It didn't take long for "civilization" to ruin it.

I was born 200 years too late, I'm sure of it.

Thanks for posting! The Missouri has apparently changed course quite a bit since 1804, I can't quite find our location on their map. I was looking for a horseshoe bend that the Corps of Engineers took out in modern times, but apparently it wasn't there in 1804 either.

I've been to the Seaside, Oregon site where they finally reached the other side of the ocean. Very cold water even in the summertime. Beautiful natural rocks with mist all over it. Beautiful area.

Fort Clatsop, where they spent the winter is a little north of Seaside, they did go south, to Seaside to boil seawater for salt....James

My mother really enjoyed those journals and my parents rode their motorcycles following their journey in 1976. Still have the photos they took. They really had fun that summer.

There were major floods in 51-52. It was probably soon after that the Corps did so much work to put in levees, straighten the channel, etc. They took out the horseshoe bend "Liberty Bend", near Liberty, Mo, and made the channel straight thru there. We live downriver a few miles from that, so was hoping to find it as a reference point on the L&C map.

The water ran from St Joe to Wathena Kans for around 5yrs. Took another couple years before it had all dried out enough they could fix the hwy #36. We went by way of Atchison to St Joe.
