Don't the caterpillars that become Gypsy Moths usually stay way up in trees?? I have chickens that will fly up, maybe 5' and roost on limbs at times, but not 40 to 50 up in a mature tree.

I see them on the ground some times - I guess they are looking for an oak tree - boy I hate those things -

I don't think chickens like hairy caterpillars. Most birds won't eat gypsy moth caterpillars, so I'm guessing that chickens won't either.
Gypsy moth caterpillars don't just stay up in the trees, especially in outbreak years, you will find them crawling all over the place. The caterpillars feed at night, and crawl down the trunk of the tree during the day to hide.
