I think it would great if you have a problem with kids knocking the mailbox off the post.

The county re-paved the road last summer and put in these. I had no problems last winter but then I had no problems with the fixed mailbox too.

It was installed slightly off and it offends my sense of order. LOL

Yeah - off balance would bug me too. They say no concrete needed but I might consider that. I know feasibly something could be built but we're short on time at this point and I think the neighbor is getting annoyed with our temp. set up.

The price is hard to swallow but I'm hoping the design will ensure it will outlast our time in the home. Plus the city will pony up if they destroy it.

I have part of a utility pole as a post and the box was made in 1946 when they put real metal in them. That utility pole post is six feet in the ground.
The box is mounted as far back as possible just far enough for the door to open. That means to hit the box you must hit the pole.
Also I cut back into the bank to mount the pole so you would have to do a quick right turn to hit it. That means the county doesn't plow up to the pole so I have to. I like it like that.
Several years ago a couple boys went down this road at night tossing some kind of exploding fireworks into all the boxes. Many had doors hanging by one hinge and bulged out sides. The only totally undamaged one on the road was mine. Mine just had the remains of the exploded item in it.
Even with that tough box I found a back up one at a swap meet and have it stored away.

We did something very similar. We dug the hole until the posthole digger was bottomed out on the ground. We have a 12 inch auger and still had to widen the hole for the post to fit. And we cut a notch in the post to recess the box in.

I have one that looks similar. The county put it in when they redid the road. A person could make one for probably 20 bucks.
