Help! getting eaten alive by Mosquitos
We have a really bad Mosquito problem at our new property we are buying to Homestead. There is a Pond - wetland on a portion of the property and the seller hasnt done much with maintaining the trees, lawn, etc so it is a bit overgrown which I know contributes to the problem. I plan on mowing the grass and removing some of the shrubs and trees around the house which I hope will help a little. Is there anything at all that can help control the Mosquito population? What have you found that works well so you can actually step outside and work without being carried away?

Set up a number of bat and martin houses around the property.

Go to u tube key in mosquito traps. Lots of good tips. I like the one with the fan. Works good on the deck.
Good luck!

We had that problem when we bought this place. We trimmed back the brush from around the house, that helped a lot. We put up bat houses. Our neighbors barn is right across the road from us and they have swallows in the barn. We also have lots of birds on our place and I notice we have dragonflies as well. We put fish in our little pond which keeps the mosquito population down. Don't have a problem now.

Until you can get the mass population under control, try sticking a dry sheet or two in your pockets when you go outside. Can't recall where I heard this tip, but it seems to work.

This year seems particularly bad for skeeters in MN. I'm hearing it from everyone. We have it bad up north, too.

We put a pond in, stocked it with bluegill and catfish. The mosquitos go to the pond to lay their eggs and the fish eat the mosquito while she is on the water, or the eggs, or the larvae. This past winter killed off our fish and we are really noticing the mosquitos.

We bought These bracelets at heb that are awesome! They're yellow rubber and look like those Slinky bracelets that people keep keys on. I'll get the name when I get home

Trap minnows out of the Sunrise river or the St. Croix and stock your pond if the DNR doesn't ban taking minnows because the water they live in has exotic species in it. You will have to bring a minnow bucket with cold well water in it to put the minnows in. It is now illegal to remove water from any body of water and take it away. You have to drain your live well, bilge, and bait bucket if it has water from the lake or river.

One day last week I was laying outside under the tree. I saw 2 mosquitos up in the tree. I heard one ask the other a question. "Should we eat him here or carry him back into the bushes. The other one replied. Let's eat him here. If we take him back in the bushes, the big ones will take him away from us.
Until you can get the squito population under control, this works for me.
In february I start taking Black Kohash and B complex. As I perspire the smell is something that they don't like. I probably get bit twice through the summer. I probably suck more in my mouth than bite me.

The only relief I have found is to wear pants, a hooded sweatshirt, gloves and a mosquito net on my head. Basically cover up ALL skin. I sweat more but would rather sweat a little than give more blood to those rascals. I'm in northern MN and they are terrible.

Evergreen Research Insect Repelling "SuperBands".
I buy them by the 50 pack off Amazon, but have also found them at the grocery store/Walmart/Walgreens/CVS/etc... for about $1 each. My son wears one on each wrist and ankle (he is allergic to skeeters) and they are amazing!
I would also suggest the fish for the pond or "Mosquito Dunks". Get rid of the standing water. Weed whack. Avoid high activity times. Get some "lemon eucalyptus" bug spray and wear the "Bug Bands". Plant lots of "bug repellant" plants around the place. Make sure to seal up the house better and that all the screens are tight.
Good luck! This year will be REALLY bad due to all the crazy polar vortex winter weather!

I've put hold fish in my stock tank as well.
I think there are a few kinds of bushes you can plant around sitting areas outside that are suppose to help repel as well

That's a dryer sheet! I think a dry sheet would too big for a pocket.
My neighbor clothes pins them to the brim of her hat. Looks funny, but works well.

We live in the woods and pasture (mix) just up hill of a large marsh. Lots of mosquitoes down there. Very few up at our place. The reason is we keep chickens. Lots and lots of chickens. They eat black flies, mosquitoes, horseflies, etc. I also stock our livestock and reservoir ponds with fish to eat the insects and we keep ducks who also eat mosquitoes in the water. Oh, and we have about 400 pigs so theoretically we should have lots of flies. But we don't. Chickens make the difference.

Deep Woods Off works for me. Our place is the test garden for it.
