While I have a few different sources of water, when I had to have a new well dug last fall I had them install a good hydrant 20 feet away, and I had enough pipe and valves put in so that I can turn off all the other underground supplies and still have that hydrant function. They were very happy to work with me, they said typically people want to save $50 and run everything off the same line, then if things go wrong everything has to be shut off and no water anywhere.... He was happy I started the conversation on how to plumb it so its isolated.
My plumbing was put in before the 1950s, not sure how old really, and someday something will go wrong, and it will be a mess, here frost line is 5 feet deep so a winter disaster or even a summer one requires a lot to deal with fixing things.
At least I will have that one outside hydrant with new hose and a water source to keep the critters happy and get a bucket to flush a toilet now and then when things go wrong.
It is piece of mind.
