Hillside Spring Artesian Well

We are in the process of selling our current homestead of ten acres and buying a really unique property with 30 acres of fields, woods and marsh / pond. In a recent walk through of the property I came across a Spring coming out of the hillside. There are quite a few rocks and a cement post and it appears as though it had been dammed up into several small pools. I am really excited about the possibility of using this water source, keeping it natural but also making small ponds that it can flow into while making its way down to our large pond. Have any of you ever worked with a spring similar to this? Looking for ideas. It has a pretty decent flow and seems to be the main source of water for the pond. I'll try to post some pictures later of the Spring area and the pond.

Also another project I would like to do is dig the pond deeper so I can put some fish in it. Right now the pond is about 100' x 100' but has a considerable amount of marshy area around three sides of it and a man made earthen dam on the fourth side which the water flows through a 6' long area that I think used to have a sluice gate of some sort.

The time to check anything like that is September. There are lots of vernal springs and brooks.

I have done quite a bit of work around springs for people. Sounds like a terrific place, with a few improvements, it could be a great water source. Seth

Here in farm country we try to get rid of those, but sounds like a wonderful asset for what you want to do.

Typically there is a lot of water around this time of year, and things tend to get real dry in mid summer through fall; if you want enough flow to support fish be sure this spring lasts longer than a month or two of a wet spring..... Since it was somewhat worked with in the past perhaps it is a longer lasting spring.

What feeds it, how much land is uphill from it, any depressions up above it that hold a bit of rain or ponds so that it will continue to run into the drier parts of summer?

Paul
