livestock sale

Took two calves to livestock sale. Did not wait to see them sold, but here are some other prices.

Small calves by the head: Holstein bull calf, $110. Holstein heifer calf, $130. Bigger Holstein bull calf, $270, claimed he was on bottle and energetic. Black beef type calf that they claimed they couldn'g locate the mother for after the pair was brought in, $360, looked to be a couple of months old.

A lot of 4 hogs were sold, 1250 pounds total for $.89 per pound. One 500 pound hog $36 a pound.

Nice 1400 pound bull $1.14 per pound. Other bulls $.85 to $1.25 per pound.
Large cows $.87 to $.98 per pound.

Cow calf pairs $1400 to $1720. This was after selling the cow and calf by the pound and then adding them together and asking for a higher price. Sometimes someone paid more, sometimes not.

I didn't see any goats sold.

I've never seen prices this high.

We are going to take 3 yearling bulls to the sale soon, hope feeder prices hold up. Approx. 800 pounds apiece, they had a tough winter.

The prices you listed for pairs seemed light to me, maybe the quality wasn't there? The last time I looked at sale reports some pairs were over $2k.

Small calves dairy breed at $110-$130...... That's pretty cheap compared to my local sale barn prices recently. I've seen jersey steers and bulls, bottle calves bring $150-$180 lately.

I work in the office in our local sale barn. Yes, prices are at record highs.

I've seen butcher cows over $1.00 and bum calves for $400...

This past weekend I took a young billy to the local auction to sell (about 20 miles away). I knew he wouldn't go for much because he wasn't very big. I BELIEVE they said they had 365 goats (but could had been 265 my hearing isn't great) total to sell but I can't remember the number of hogs. The prices on the goats were comparable to the prices over the last 18 months here. There were only a few calves sold (this auction is billed as goat, pig, small animal) and they were a bit higher than I would had expected. Pork prices definitely were higher than normal, as were hen prices.

Of course I didn't make any profit as my kids ate most of my proceeds (it was a FAMILY experience) and my wife decided we needed 18 new buff chicks.

edit: forgot to mention that there were 3 jacks there ...two sold for $20 each but no one wanted the third.
