Don't screw around
Hi gang.
I just want to tell you not to screw around with the signs of a stroke. I had them Friday morning, Kathe took me to the little hospital in town and then they flew me to Seattle.
I was speaking gibberish and couldn't make sense of anything for about 10 hours (more than usual). I was out of it but I'm told the teleconference between the home hospital and Seattle was kind of cool, and the flight in a medivac too, but I don't remember any of it.
Anyway, this is my first time in a hospital in my whole 67 years and it made an impression.
IF you show any signs of a stroke, go to to your hospital and get the magic shot to desolve the blood clot. You've got about 3 hours.
They've scanned me about 27 ways and I have no damage they can find so far. I hope to get out after another day or so of observation. YOU should do the same!!!

Glad you are better, Gray Wolf. You are so right, and thanks for sharing your story. Got called to the ER last night for a 53 yo man with chest pain since the day before. Big heart attack, and not much to do about it now that the heart is so badly damaged.

I had a a TIA (mini stroke) the other night. I notice my right foot would not working and my right hand was numb. I called an ambulance and they confirmed my suspicions. I got better in about in about 2 hour. They offered me that shot but I refused after talking to the DR about it on the internet. He agreed that it would be a wast of time. This is the 9 time that I had a TIA and a bleeding stroke. So I am very aware of the of the sine of a stroke. Isn't it great that what modern technology can do to help stroke patients. Just after the DR got through with me I asked him if I had seen hem that day he looked at me and said yes. He was in Little Rock and I was in Harrison.

That's sometimes referred to as "word salad", BTW.
So glad you're ok, and you too, Old Vet!

Hoo Boy, glad you are OK.
So, are you getting a ig workup now to determine what led up to the stroke?
Hi blood pressure?
Cholesterol
lack of exercise?
Eating?
Weight?
I'm around 50, and seeing [& feeling] that I need to get more serious about my lifestyle.

Back home now and no known aftereffects. Yea!
They tested Everything!
Normal blood pressure, work on farm, good diet, 6'-4" & 190 lb, but cholesterol a bit high. They haved me on a pill for that and I can say goodby to french fries. But other than that I'm happy.

In your case, the magic shot - which busts clots - might have made things worse by allowing further bleeding. The important point to remember is that there are the two different main types of strokes - clotting (which clogs a blood vessel) and bleeding. IIRC the clot type is much more common.
Strokes are horrible things.

The symptoms of stroke are distinct because they happen quickly:
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side of the body)
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause
What should a bystander do?
If you believe someone is having a stroke – if he or she suddenly loses the ability to speak, or move an arm or leg on one side, or experiences facial paralysis on one side – call 911 immediately.

Wow! 1) thanks for sharing, good reminder for everyone 2) well done you & Kathe -- for recognizing the issue and getting help and 3) glad to hear they find no lingering problems.

Great job for you and your wife to recognize signs of a stroke and having medical intervention. A decade ago while in the barn feeding goats, I had a TIA (transient ischemic attack). However, I probably wouldn't have known it was happening except that my dh was in there too. I tried to talk to him but couldn't get the words out and just laughed. He noticed that one side of my mouth drooped. This all occurred within about 30 seconds. If I was alone or sleeping, it wouldn't have been noticed. Wonder how many others have had undetected mini strokes. Mine was due to plaque build up in one carotid artery on which I had surgery. I'm statin intolerant so after 7 months of drug treatment, I had to discontinue it. Extreme weight gain, skin rash, and muscle pain in the legs were my issues with Lipitor. Never again.

nappy, My dad had the leg pain and weakness. By the time he got off the meds he could hardly walk and had started falling. Not good for someone in their 70's! It took him over a year to recover and he still has some leg weakness years later.

They even had more test like ultra sound of the heart and carotid artery. But I passed them all except for exercise. I am going to go to the hospital to have surgery on both legs. 70% blockage in both legs.

I had a co-worker that all of a sudden started talking nonsense. I asked him "Where are you.' He jibber jabbared. I called 911. He was lucky that the hospital way only about a block away.
Major stroke, but he was able to recover after about a month. The Drs said because I recoongized the symtoms so quickly it probably saved his life. I was just glad he was OK.

So glad that you're feeling better, Gray Wolf! My 80 year old mom experienced an incredibly small stroke a couple of months ago. She immediately recognized the symptoms (which are posted on the side of the fridge) and was able to communicate enough to get my dad to call 911. My parents live 45 minutes from the hospital and by the time that I got to see her about an hour and a half had passed. She didn't even look as though anything had happened. No drooping, no slurring and best of all...No therapy was needed after discharge!
Knowing those symptoms made all the difference and I'm so glad that she wasn't home alone. I haven't been around here as much lately because that episode made me realize that I really need to spend more time with my mom. No matter how active they are...You just never know how much time you're going to get with your parents or any other loved one, for that matter!
