My firewood has been used shipping pallets for so long it is crazy to think about burning tree wood.
I do still want to buy a load of poles next Spring since the last tractor I bought came with a great splitter mounted on it.
I also have 6 or 7 buzz rigs and a large Unicorn splitter.

I always stay one year ahead but this past winter was so cold that I went a couple cords into my next year wood. I managed to replace that and will start on the following years wood as soon as the garden is in ! Cherry , Elm, Hickory and Ash

I DO use a splitter

Picked mine up at an auction. Made enough money from the auction the wood is actually free like the new tiller.

Someone gave me a bunch of seasoned and split wood. I have it all home, but some is too big for my stove. I still need to stack it and cut and/or split some of it. I have a splitter, but don't use it unless I can't split it w/my axe. And, I'm a 53 yo woman.

I'm a 36 year old man, and I use my splitter. I don't fire it up unless I have at least a truckload or two to split. But I didn't spend my hard earned money on it just to let it collect dust while I try to brag up myself by telling people I have a splitter but prefer to split by hand...
Nope, I try to work smarter so I don't have to work harder.

Congratulations, Mr. Slade -- your thread title wins the Internet today!

I wish I hadn't let my fourth husband keep the nice splitter my ex-boyfriend had built for us ... sure could use that sucker now!

Good for you!!! Unfortunately, there are plenty that don't and learn to regret it. I wasn't always great about implementing that, however, used risk-based reasoning since I was a young teen. This has served me well all these years.

DH is 58, can still split with the best of 'em, but he built a hydraulic log splitter, and uses it every year. He still splits the Alder by hand, using an ax.

If my splitter were easier to use, I'd use it more often. But it's electric and is made to split horizontally instead of vertically. Quite truthfully, it's harder on me to get the wood onto it-especially the really big pieces!, than it is to split it by hand. If I cannot split the big pieces by hand, I have to use a wedge and a sledge to split them small enough for me to get on it. Plus, it is on very small tires, so it's hard for me to move around. So using the splitter for all the wood is actually more work, not less. It's also hard on my back.

I have seen electric ones that split vertically, but they cost as much as the gas powered ones, which I cannot afford. Nor have I found one on CL that I can afford.
