"I went to the auction..."
I've noticed a lot of people mentioning going to livestock auctions to either buy or sell animals. Despite numerous google searches, I have not found any information about how to locate one of these auctions. Is it something that is passed by word of mouth or is there some science behind figuring out when and where they take place in your region?

At the local sale house. You can find them by smell. Just look in the yellow pages for sale barns.

Is there a Ag paper in the area? Is their a small town tradin post type want ad paper? Or even a larger city trading post want ads and selling things paper around? Is there a Ag store around? A Feed Mill?, they should have ads either posted or even flyers.
All those things should have listing for farm auctions etc.

The first one I found was on Craigs List as listed as a "Saturday Night Chicken Sale". Since I was looking for chickens I thought I'd hit pay dirt!
You can ask at a local Southern States or other feed store where there are locals. I'm sure they would point you in the right direction.

Go to auctionzip.com. A box will come up where you can type in your zip code as well as a box w/different types of auctions-including agricultural. It will list all the auctions w/in 30 miles that have been submitted to it. That's how I found info on an auction a friend wanted to go to.

Auctionzip is a great tool, several Auctions I go to use it---But the "Best" animal Auction I go to does not list on it. Last night this Auction had several hundred "boxes" of chickens/chicks/quail/phesents/rabbits/ducks/etc that sold and alot of hatching eggs. There are 2 more Auctions I go to during the month that do not use Auctionzip so Check Craigslist and the bullentin board at your feed and grain. If you see someone at the feed and grain/Tractor Supply buying Alot of chicken/animal feed---just ask them if they know where any animal auctions are at.

We have one near us but I dont use that one as they don't do small animals so I drive a hour to go to the one that does. I also get much better prices then I would it I sold locally so its worth the drive.

Your county extension agent should know where all the livestock auctions are and which ones are best for what you're looking to buy/sell. Sometimes they're tough to find by searching because they're listed as trucking companies or other things that you wouldn't necessarily connect with sales.

At fairs and festivals through the summer the local goat, hog, chicken and rabbit fancier clubs, as well as 4-H and FFA groups will have a display. It can be a great information source for all kinds of information like that. Also you can see who's available in your area to netwaork with.

Since NH has very little real agricultural infrastructure left, there are very few auctions here, like they have in the midwest. There is one small one in Rumney, but the owner recently passed away and there is doubt about his childrens' ability to keep it going. Flame in Littleton MA is really the only area livestock auction, but then you have to deal with those nasty, nasty women in their office. There is also the Northhampton auction in Whately MA which has much better customer service than Flame, but is also further away. There is talk of another auction starting up in central NH, but nothing confirmed yet. Other than that, the next closest real auction of any merit is in PA.
There are several minor get togethers run by and for backyard hacks and livestock owners with a pet or often a human mentality toward their animals, but those aren't to be taken seriously. They're basically gigglefests for pet owners, and don't offer much for the serious or knowledgeable farmer.

I think the best way would be to find a auctioneer in you area and ask him. or you could call a newspaper for information.

I just tried it for the area we're in.. They have a weekly livestock auction. auctionzip doesn't list it... However, WOW.. I didn't know they had as many auctions in that area of WV as they are showing.. Just not showing any livestock auctions..
For the OP, best bet is go to the local feed store and ask them....

Georgia has a web listing through the Georgia department of Agriculture.
http://agr.georgia.gov/1livestock-sa...-calendar.aspx
Perhaps New Hampshire has something similar? Did you check out their dept of ag? Or how about one of the other states within driving distance of where you live since NH isn't one of the bigger states. Perhaps they have something.
I did see where NH has a WEEKLY market bulletin (including an online version) that you must subscribe to. It is very possible that there are auctions listed in it (I know the Georgia version of Market Bulletin, which is monthly, has auctions listed).

I never considered a question such as this. I grew up going to auction barns and have probably been to 15 or so around Texas and have driven by twice that many in various towns.
I googled Texas livestock auctions and came up with this list
http://www.texasagriculture.gov/home...kauctions.aspx
So I googled New Hampshire livestock auctions and while I didnt see a master list, there were a few listed.
But then, Texas is a cow state. I really dont know much about New Hampshire.

This site works great. Just type in your town and it should show the ones around you. I tested it out on Huntsville, Al. and Pensacola Fl. The two that I know for sure popped up which are in small towns. This is for cows, not for sure about goats and the such.

Always spotted them in the local paper or in the local shopper/advertising paper
