Farm Companion

These guys were my farm companions today. They seem to come by every afternoon. I finally got a picture of them. Aren't they beautiful? I think they're some kind of hawk but I'm not sure.

Looks like turkey vultures to me. We see tons of them here in the winter.

Rats! That means the husband was right. He said buzzards but I always thought that a buzzard was an ugly bird and these are so beautiful.

They are beautiful when flying, but up close and still, they are butt ugly.

That's what I tell dh when he's working under a car.

"You need to move more. The buzzards are circling again."

Vultures are really relaxing to watch fly as they work the thermals. They give you a chance to look up from your work to see them go through. Everyone needs an excuse to lean on the shovel or rake handle once in awhile.

I don't find vultures to be ugly.
The design is amazing and their role in the world is so vital.
I just love them.

And in the zoo in Fla, we had the injured ones that could not fly any longer wandering everywhere like chickens.
It was cool.
I guess that is where I got my love of them.

I dunno...I find them kind of ugly...We've got lots of them, but they serve a vital function.

They love our place. The wind comes up the valley and they can float it the thermal for hours. The air force jets do not like them.

They are pretty to watch when they fly. They seem to have a standard routine and tend to show up at the same time in the afternoon. They cruise over the neighbors, then go over our woods, then cruise our fields and then sit on top of our barn for a while before they vanish for the day. Always the same routine.

I too love watching them fly, to me it's like watching a ballet in the sky. There is a flock of about 25 that fly over my house every evening and perch it the trees at the park less then a 1/2 a block from my house. The trees are tall and I can watch from my back porch as they fly in looking for the perfect branch to land on. Its cool.

I love this thread and the whole site.

It's so good to find like minded people. Friends and family made me to believe I was the only one that watched birds high in the sky. I'm laughing at my idea of a busy intersection, but recently some osprey built a nest and I am forever scanning to see whats up with it.

Then today I saw what looked like wood ducks but were as big as canada geese fly over. (The only problem with all this bird watching is that it's hard to keep the car going straight.) Never heard of these birds, but the unfortunate creats aren't much loved like our loons.

And I'm not sure the bald eagles I've seen aren't buzzards. I'm sure there are no buzzards here.

We get them all the time. They land in the trees behind our place and drive the dog crazy. I guess she thinks they are after her chickens.

The ones I remember as a kid in NE Kans had long featherless necks, like Turken chickens, and had a wing span of around 6ft at least.
