Demolishing/repurposing a koi pond.

We recently bought a house what has one and besides not wanting to deal with the upkeep, we have a dog that loves seafood. lol.

What would you do? My idea was to leave the concrete intact, pump out the water, fill it with dirt and plant stuff in it.

Ideas? We're looking for the least labor-intensive ones possible.

How big is it, and how deep? Is it possible you could grow something else in there that you could eat?

One word,

AQUAPONICS. You already have the fish tank, all you need is grow beds and a pump. Then you could grow the most beautiful flowers you could ever imagine.

Koi are supposed to be tasty fish. As long as you have a pond you won’t have mosquitos. The mosquitos will lay their eggs in the pond and the fish will eat them. Koi are pretty rough on vegetation which is why you usually see lilies in koi ponds. Fish out the koi, put in another fish, and as Muleman wrote, grow aquaponics.

Have you looked at the price of well-grown koi? That could pay for material to keep dogs and birds out of the pond, and still leave a very nice bit of change.

I don't know how they did it..it's cold in the winter! We live in MN. How the heck does that work? A heater of some sort maybe? We're honestly leaning toward filling it in since he works 14+ hours a day, I work almost FT and neither of us has the time nor energy to deal with this. For whatever reason it worked for the previous couple, although apparently there are tons of hawks that would get their fish from time to time, per the neighbor's report. That must have been a big bummer...

Build a deck over it, then if you like you later move the deck and be able to use the pond.

I would put a pump in the pond and use it like a cistern for watering the yard or garden also.
