Looking for kudzu in North Texas

I am looking for a place to dig up some kudzu in the Grapevine/Lewisville/Highland Village area of Texas. I am in town until Sunday and would like to find some kudzu to dig on Saturday or Sunday.

I KNOW that kudzu is invasive, but I live in Northern Minnesota and kudzu will not survive the winters there. I am going to grow it in my greenhouse, in pots, for winter rabbit/guinea pig feed. It will never leave the greenhouse.

If anyone knows where I can find some, please let me know.

I'm not sure about the area you mentioned. But every area I've seen with kudzu it was easily spotted from the road. It wouldn't be difficult to get cuttings. FWIW, kudzu is now in WV. That's means it's adapted to freezing winters here. Granted it's not MN.

I've not really spotted any there yet Darren.. I never knew it could be used as feed though.. Something I'll have to look in to..

This past winter wiped out all my standing bamboo... You know it's a hard winter to kill that off... but I'm sure I'm about to have new sprouts all over the place.. what a mess that's going to be with all the old dead stuff standing in the new live stuff..

The kudzu I've seen is near Charleston and one other location I don't recall. Japanese knotweed is the newest PITA invasive locally.

Kudzu will absolutely survive the winters you have. I live in NY and after this horrible winter we had, guess what's beginning to green up? Yep, the kudzu.

Not that close to your location, but there is some on the railroad r-o-w north of Paris, TX. North side of the Red River on hwy 271.

Kudzu has moved into Ohio and is surviving the winters here just fine.

OTHER INVASIVES


There are several new invasive plants in the
Midwest that may be kept at bay by Minnesota’s cold temperatures.

Here are a few that may survive in Zone 5 but not in Zone 4:


- Kudzu (Pueraria Montana var. lobata)
- Tree of Heaven (Alianthus altissima)
- Chinese Yam (Dioscorea oppositifolia)
- Pale-swallow-wort (Cynanchum rossicum)

And anyway, as I said, I want it only to grow in my greenhouse. It will never set foot (or root, or shoot, or whatever), in the soil on our farm, just in case.

You're playing with fire with that stuff. The only thing I've seen that can control it after it gets started is grazing. Go into the hospital or take a vacation for a few weeks, and your greenhouse would be covered up. It grows feet per day with sufficient moisture.

In Mississippi it was called the yard a day plant. People said you needed to mulch it with concrete blocks if you wanted it to grow better.

We got it in NE Okla. I don't have it nor have I seen it and known what I was looking at, but people in church say that its here.

kuduz is excellent grazing for goats or cows. Had some not far from me and the cows didn't want to leave the gully it was in. So I let them, too long I guess it defoliated the plants so bad from being eaten that the plant never returned the next year.
