Advertisements & how many are on dial-up

I wonder how many are affected by the amount of advertisements on this forum and other sub-forums on HT?
I am on dial-up with hardly any options for high speed. The latest additional advertisements are making me re-think how much I should access HT due to the time it takes to download all the pics in the ads.
Is there some way to opt out of ads?
Why are there double ads on each sub-forum? I thought when they eliminated the extra ads that would appear in each particular post, that would mostly solve the problem, but now there are double ads at the start of each subforum...and then when you go to another subforum it occurs all over again.
Many of the ads aren't even applicable to some members. A new car? A new tractor? LTS is right maybe in the Preparedness forum, but not particularly in others. Is it taking so much to run the site? Or is it a truly profit motive only?
I'm sorry that Chuck sold the site.

You need to get some browser plugins that will block ads and keep them from using your bandwidth..

Here's a way to have less ads show, help support the upkeep of the site, for those that don't like the number of ads when you are logged in.

It costs a great deal of money to run a website. You have to pay for server space, maintenance of web pages, etc. $12.00 per year isn't that bad, that is a dollar a month.

Try this;

Go to the second sticky thread in this section - "Extreme Composting" by Forerunner. It has lots of pictures. As your computer is slowly loading the pictures click on the "thread tools " banner (dark blue banner at the right just above the first post)

Choose printable version. Your computer will refresh to a text version of the thread. It will show the address for each picture only. If you want see the picture click on the address.

Unfortunately you have to do this with each thread, but it should help when you find your computer slowly loading a page. It reverts back to regular loading at the next thread.

Let us know if this helps.

I use Firefox with Ad Blocker Plus. I get just the site sponsors banner.

I also use NoScript add on but this comes with nuisance side effects. It was necessary for another site that produced irritating and potentially damaging popups.

For further help check this site. http://www.labnol.org/software/brows...nections/8059/

I would like to compliment the web crew for doing the banner Lehman ad in plain text and hosting it on site. I understand the current model of web page design, but I have to think that some pages - like many of the news sites - are more impressed with presenting the boss and his high speed connection with gee-gaws than getting a job done.

It isn't just dial-up that is experiencing problems. My Android tablet doesn't have an ad-blocker active on it, and I have all but given up web browsing with it because by the time the containers and ads load it is often a minute more, and the browser is coming up with a "page is unresponsive, close?" warning.

I know that it is a challenge for small businesses to go after advertising dollars, but the results are much better for advertisers and the publication. I'm also enough of a realist to know that it only works when one person on the staff has the skills and incentive to make the contacts and do the convincing.

I've used ad-blockers, script-blockers and tweaked host files for years to allow me to continue to access the net in a reasonable manner.

I am sorry that you have had troubles. I have never been slammed, insulted or attacked even though I often deserve it.

Phone line here. Heavy bandwidth is an issue. I run with flash, blink, gif and such turned off to help minimize the load.

It cost money to run websites. When you access a charge is incurred. I offset this cost that would otherwise come out of my pocket by showing ads.

If ads bother you that much I have put forth a program that allows you to donate to the communities operating expenses, and in exchange you can turn off ads.

How is this an insult?

For the record we run less ads than Chuck did.

I'm having to reinstall the ad block program now. Just for the record.
