Why all the trackers on this forum?

I use tracker blocking software that alerts me to the number of trackers on any given website. I was surprised to see this site using so many- craigslist, for example, doesn't use any. I wonder how others feel about having all this data recorded about them every time they visit this site?

I saw a total of 7 until I logged in. Now that I'm logged in, I see none.

I assume they're for advertising to help pay for the site. I'd assume that I'm not seeing them when I'm logged in because I'm a paying user. You can do the same if you're concerned with them.

I'm not personally concerned with them since they're pretty benign.

Trackers are software that records details about you when you log onto a web site. Many people consider them invasive and/or obtrusive. This data can be sold, mined, or otherwise used for marketing, etc.

Craigslist is a good place to maybe find a good local deal. Otherwise, it is lousy with international scammers. Just advertise a high priced item and in about 30 minutes they will contact you. Also, the forums on Craigslist are unregulated, full of offensive posts, and downright creepy. Not a good apples to apples comparison!

I've always thought it amusing when some program or someone is tracking my habits, whether it be websites or shopping. I'm the most boring person on Earth and if they are tracking me, their life is even more pathetic than mine.

This is what they're for.
And so when I was doing taxes at TT a few days ago, of course it tripped the ad bots here that are now flashing me banners to "Come finish your taxes in a few easy clicks!"
Or when I was updating my Audible que, I end up with banners of the latest sales promos at Audilbe (which I like to see, actually, as I never catch them otherwise)

Yes, since the new ownership and ads on HT (it used to be more ads for small survival companies and Backwoods Home Magazine), it appears the ads are targeted to key words used in posts. I'm not overly concerned, but it does bug me. I keep meaning to become a paying member, perhaps it's time!

I use a tracking blocker, like I said, and encourage others who don't like to have their web data collected, analyzed, sold, etc., and their privacy otherwise compromised, to use one as well.

Craigslist was an example of a site without any trackers. There are many others. I was surprised to see so many on this site.

I see Quantcast (3 requests) and skimlinks and Google (2 requests) for a total of 6. Compared to other sites, that isn't a lot.

It's for marketing and as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't do any of the companies any good to 'track' me ... I've bought the same items for years from the same companies so I never pay any attention.

It doesn't come as a surprise to me that a site that is frequented by people with a self reliant attitude is being tracked.

HT is free and available for everyone to enjoy but in order to keep it that way, advertising is a necessary evil.

So as a forum moderator, you are telling us that these trackers are only advertisers, not government/NSA ? Can you assure us that our information is not being collected by an NSA spy agency and used to help them create a profile on the users here? Are the owners willing to make a statement to that effect?

Do you really think that the mods or owners would even know if the NSA were collecting data?
